Top Ten Tuesday: Costumes Characters Would Wear on Halloween

Hey peeps and welcome to another Top Ten Tuesday as hosted by the lovely people over at The Broke & the Bookish. Today’s topic was a Halloween freebie, so we could talk about our favorite scary books, non-scary books that would get you in the fall/Halloween mood, etc, so I decided to talk about what I think some characters would wear as costumes on Halloween if they celebrated it.

I mean, this is a fun thing, right? I can picture some of these quite clearly, so let’s jump right into it! Also, all of my fanart can be found on my deviantART page.

1. Cath from Fangirl would go as Simon Snow. I mean, that’s kind of hands down, right? Or maybe she’d go as Baz and make Levi go as Simon. OMG YES. I SEE IT. Couples costumes FTW.

2. Aelin from Throne of Glass would probably go as Marie Antoinette, with the huge dress, ginormous hair, the fan, everything. She’d own and rock it. And then she’d make Rowan dress up in a really frilly outfit, too, because he can’t be looking shabby next to her.

3. Rhysand from A Court of Mist and Fury would go as something goofy or sensual. It can’t be both, he’d go as one or the other. So he’d either go as a ghost (like, a sheet over himself with holes for eyes cut out), or he’d go as a sexy male pirate or something. And then Feyre would probably be Maleficent, like the Angelina Jolie version.

4. Warner from Shatter Me would probably go as a vampire. And it would be immaculate and impeccable and he’d given Aelin a run for her money. I can see a fight breaking out between those two… Juliette would go as a countess to match Warner and she would just watch from a distance as he and Aelin fought.

5. Shazi from The Wrath and the Dawn I could see going as Katara from Avatar: The Last Airbender because they both have fiery spirits and I can see her not putting up with anyone’s crap (while also amazing everyone with her own magic). Khalid would be Ang to compliment Shazi’s choice.

6. Simon from Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda would go as Harry Potter, because duh. And then Blue would go as Draco and it would be every fangirl’s dream come to reality. Yup.

7. Nikolai from Siege & Storm would go as a pirate. Like, an actual full fledged pirate with the hook, the big, the big hat, everything. And then Alina would probably go as some Final Fantasy character, like Garnet from FFIX. I could see Mal maybe being Spider Man or some other sort of hero.

8. Karou from Daughter of Smoke & Bone would go as an angel just to tease Akiva and then Akiva would just wear like cat or dog ears and a tail. It would be cute and hilarious and I need this in my life.

9. Laia from An Ember in the Ashes would probably be Wonder Woman because she is so strong on the inside that she needs to bring that to the outside. And then Elias would probably be, like, Iron Man. Or Batman. Either way.

10. The group from The Raven Boys would all be someone from The Wizard of Oz. Blue would hand make her own Dorothy costume, complete with red shoes and all. Gansey would be the scarecrow, Adam would go as the Lion, Ronan… well, they’d force Ronan to go as something, but he’d probably pick one of the flying monkeys just to piss everyone off.

I have such an urge to draw fanart of all of these costumes. These would be so fun to see and I think every person would have such fun going out to a Halloween party together.

What can you picture these characters going as? Do you think any of them would rebel against a costume? Tell me what you think your favorite character would wear out!

Top Ten Tuesday: Characters I’d Name My Dog After

Welcome to another Top Ten Tuesday as hosted by the lovely people of The Broke and the Bookish! Today’s topic is all about characters that we’d name our children/dog/cat/car/etc with. I love this kind of topic, which is similar to one I did a few weeks ago and I talked about characters that I’d name my children after, but now I’m going to talk about my next important love: dogs.

I am such a dog person. I miss having a dog so, SO much. I love their noses and eyes and wiggly butts when they wag their tails and they’re the cutest things in the world. And these are some of the names that I’d probably name my dog after if I got one (if it didn’t already have a name that stuck to it). I’m going to separate between male and female, so here we go!

  • Magnus – Take this name from whatever series you want, but I LOVE this name and if I can’t name my child it, then I’ll name my dog with it. It’s strong, it’s magical, and it’s perfect. And I’d name a golden retriever with this name just to throw people off.
  • Flynn – I know I used this for my child names, too, but I just love the name Flynn. It’s cute and fun and I think it would fit a dog like some sort of terrier. Like, a high energy dog that’s really cute.
  • Gansey – I would need a prim and proper dog because that’s honestly all I can think about when I hear this name. I mean, I love Gansey and he’s not completely prim and proper, but he’s very polite, so I’d hope to have a friendly dog with this name. I can picture like a King Charles Spaniel or something like that.
  • Gideon, or G for short – I actually think the name Gideon is really cute. I don’t know what it is, but there’s something about it that makes me happy. And it’s the name of two of my favorite book characters, so there’s that, too. I can picture a mutt with this name, really. So cute.
  • Fitz – Another cute, spunky name for a terrier, in my opinion. Honestly, if the dog has high energy, I can just imagine it having this name. And the name just makes me smile when I say it, so there’s that, too.

  • Feyre – Yup. I would do this. I do think that the name Feyre is really lovely and all of that, and it’s short enough that a dog would know that I’m calling her. I can picture this for like a German shepherd or a husky.
  • Vhalla – Hey, high fantasy names! You’re my favorite! I think the name Vhalla is just really pretty and I think it would more suit a setter kind of dog.
  • Shazi – From The Wrath & the Dawn, I think having a dog like a Shiba Inu or a long haired breed like a Yorkie or Papillion would be so cute. And hopefully the dog would have a fiery spirit to match the name.
  • Laia – I think this name is so pretty and even though I keep thinking Star Wars, I know that’s not the pronunciation of the name. Still, I think it’s fitting of a dog that’s like a Dalmatian or a Corgi. It’s befitting any kind, really.
  • Celaena – I know what you’re thinking, “Rayna, what are you doing?” BUT LET’S BE REAL, I’M TOG TRASH, OKAY!? And if I can’t name my human child Celaena/Aelin, then I’ll name my dog that. And she would be lovely and feisty and I’d love her to bits.

And there you have it! Ten names I’d name my dog IF I HAD ONE. One day I’ll have a dog again and if there’s not a name that sticks then I’m picking one of these, I swear it.

Let’s Chat! ≧◡≦

What character would you name a pet after? It doesn’t necessarily have to be a dog, but maybe a cat or bird or fish or lizard. Tell me the cool literary names you’d name one if it were a male or a female.

Relating to Characters

You know when you’re reading and you can feel part of yourself connecting with a character? Whether it’s because of their situation, their personality, how they talk, etc, there is usually something you find in a character that you latch on to and you find yourself needing more and more of that character.

So I was thinking to myself, what kinds of characters do I relate to? Do I relate more toward the hero or the villain? What about the side characters? Is there a reason I always want them to be my best friends in real life? I’m going to decipher all of this and talk about some of each kind of character I can think of that I feel I relate to.

  • Karou from Daughter of Smoke & Bone – I feel like I relate to her in the sense that I feel the need to go places I’ve never been before. That wanderlust streak kind of overtakes me sometimes and I just need to get out. Of course, what that really is is anxiety, but still, very similar.
  • Cath from Fangirl – This book was me in college. I’m very much an introvert (well, more like an ambivert with introvert tendencies) and I just always wanted to stay locked up in my room away from everyone and do my own thing. Hell, I’m still like that now – and I’m married. I mean, I love my husband, but I need my Me Time, thanks. Plus, I love to write, as does Cath, so there’s that, too.
  • Samantha from Every Last Word – Now I have never been diagnosed with OCD or any form of it, but reading this has made me think on how I do have certain obsessive thoughts sometimes or how I need something to be just the right way where it was before. Just similar things that made me feel close to her.
  • Kakeru from Orange – I relate so much to him and this manga series because it’s about a character, Kakeru, who has depression and sucidal thoughts after the loss of his mother which he blames himself for. Now, I don’t blame myself for anyone’s death, but I do have depression and I have had suicidal thoughts before, so just the emotions is what I really understand greatly. The whole putting on a happy face and “faking it til you make it” crap… Yeah.

I honestly don’t know that I relate to villains. I mean, I know I have my ups and downs like anyone, but I generally don’t wish to hurt people. I’m sure there’s a villain somewhere that I relate to, I just can’t think of one right now.

Side Characters

  • Simon from The Mortal Instruments – Simon is like a cute little morsel that I just want to keep in my pocket. Until it melts and gets all gross… BUT he’s funny and sarcastic and points things out like they are and I just love him. He’s probably my favorite character in this series just because of how fun he is.
  • Morrigan from A Court of Misty and Fury – Mor has a tragic past, yes, but she’s loyal to her friends and she’s funny, sarcastic, caring… Honestly, she’s just awesome because she’s also kickass.
  • Despina from The Wrath and the Dawn – I think I’m just drawn to sarcastic characters because every single character on this side character list is sarcastic. But despite that, she’s intelligent and knows how to keep a secret, and she tries to be strong when she should let others help with her burdens.
  • Zuzana from Daughter of Smoke & Bone – I LOVE HER. And her silly sarcastic quips. And her shyness and boldness at the same time. UGH. SHE’S SO AWESOME. I can’t put her into words.

So either I relate to all kinds of mental illnesses, or to sarcasm. Nice. I mean, I’m generally a happy person who loves to smile and laugh, and these characters do, too, once they understand that it’s okay to. I think that’s probably the most relatable part out of all of them.

Beautiful People: Childhood Edition

Hey peeps! Welcome to another round of Beautiful People! It’s hosted by Cait @ Paper Fury and Sky @ Further Up & Further In. If you want to know more about Beautiful People, you can check out the FAQs page here.

This month’s theme is around childhood, which is interesting because sometimes when you write about characters you don’t always think about what their lives were like as kids, or even what their futures will look like as adult; you think about what’s happening in the present. So this is a chance to take a closer look at the childhood of one of your characters.

For this particular edition I’m going to talk about a character I just created not that long ago, a man named Celezar (sell-eh-zhar). He is a human man who is twenty years old and is a soldier in his father’s army. Oh, and he’s also in love with a Dragon named Talia. Mind you, in this world, Dragons are able to shift into humans, but they often have one telling characteristic that can distinguish them as Dragons. For some, that may be they are unable to shift away their wings, or they can’t shift away the slit of their pupil, or maybe a patch of scales can still be seen. For Talia, her telling characteristic is her eyes.

But Celezar is a young man who grew up the son of the General, so he has had a lot of pressure put on his shoulders to be strong, the be a warrior, and the vanquish the kingdom of Dragons. He has a free spirit and a heart for people, but he also does not want to disappoint his father or his King and the kingdom. Of course, as you can imagine, that is kind of a predicament.

So let’s explore Celezar’s childhood, shall we?

  1. What are their first childhood memory? Celezar was running in a meadow one day away from the small cottage his family called home. He was about four or five at the time, and he went to go play a farther than he ever had before. In the meadow he came upon a sleeping Dragon – an Earthdrake with a massive jaw, dark brown and green scales, and no wings. He remembers going up to the Dragon and putting his little hand against its massive nose and when he looked up he saw that the dragon was watching him. He stood still with fear, but the Dragon just lifted its head and looked down at him, the scales shifting in color from brown to green to a deep blue, and back to brown. He heard his mother scream from a distance away and the Dragon looked up at her before rising to its feet, looked at him one more time, and lumbered away.
  2. What were their best and worst childhood experiences? Best: Getting to pet the Earthdrake. Worst: His mother passed from a different Dragon attack when he was about nine years old as she tried to protect him. Their house ended up burning, and though she managed to get Celezar out of the house, she couldn’t get out herself and burned inside.
  3. What was their childhood home like? It was quaint and cozy with four bedrooms, a large study, a nice kitchen, and a huge yard that he could practice with his father or play games with the other kids in the surrounding area.
  4. What’s something that scared them as child? Close spaces. He’s still claustrophobic to this day, but as a soldier he’s had to learn to handle it; only in extenuating circumstances would he have a problem.
  5. Who did they look up to most? He looked up to his father, for sure. He was strong, intelligent, charismatic, and fun.
  6. Favourite and least favourite childhood foods? Faves: Blueberry pie, roasted ham. Least Faves: Brussel sprouts, pumpkin anything.
  7. If they had their childhood again, would they change anything? He’d definitely make sure his mother would still be alive to this day, that’s for sure.
  8. What kind of child were they? Curious? Wild? Quiet? Devious? He was a happy child, always smiling and giggling at a lot of things. He was also highly curious and wanted to know all about the world around him. He took an interest in medicine and wanted to help out the local doctors as much as possible.
  9. What was their relationship to their parents and siblings like? He was very close with both of his parents, but more so his mother than his father because his father would always be away at war meetings or on the battlefield. He doesn’t have any siblings.
  10. What did they want to be when they grew up, and what did they actually become? He wanted to become a doctor, one that could study medicine for both humans and Dragons, but he became a soldier to please his father.

And there you have it! You (and I) got to learn a little bit about Celezar and who he is as a character. I’m actually really happy that I got to do this because it gets me thinking about his past and how it can affect him now and such.

Top 5 Wednesday: Favorite Character Names

Welcome to another Top 5 Wednesday as hosted by Sam @ Thoughts on Tomes. I know I’m posting this week’s topic a week or so late, but I wanted to do this topic so here we are!

This week’s topic is about our favorite character names. Pretty self explanatory, but I’ll talk a little bit about why I like each of these names.

5. Morrighan

I find the name to be a strong feminine name, one that I associate with old tales and proud women. It’s very lovely.

4. Iseult

I love Iseult as a character, but her name is also pretty. I think it’s harsh in tone, but it holds a kind of tenderness to it, too.

3. Ronan

I just. Ugh. I love the name and I love him.

2. Jace

I’ve actually really liked this name for a long time and my husband and I have decided that if we ever have a baby boy that that’s going to be his name.

1 . Celaena Sardothian/Aelin Galathynius

I love high fantasy names as I used to role-play with those kinds of names, so I just love the flow of both Celaena and Aelin. Both are lovely and strong and telling of who they belong to.
