Mid-Year Book Freak Out Tag

Hey, it’s another tag! These are super fun, so I wanted to do another one. So, here we are with the Mid-Year Book Freak Out Tag as created by Read Like Wildfire. I saw this over on Sophie @ Blame Chocolate‘s blog, so check out her answers, too!

This tag is pretty much one in which we reflect on the books we’ve read this year (and want to read this year) and pick one for each category, so here we go:

Best Book You’ve Read So Far in 2016

Have you heard of a little book called A Court of Mist and Fury yet? Because this was, by far, the best book I’ve read this year. It had action, romance, betrayal, awesome characters, and so much more. I loved it so much and I couldn’t recommend it enough. If you didn’t like ACOTAR, definitely check out ACOMAF.

Best Sequel You’ve Read So Far in 2016

One of my favorite trilogies of all time is Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor, but for this specific question I’m going with Dreams of Gods and Monsters, the third book in the trilogy. It’s massive compared to the other two, but it is nothing short of amazing. The beautiful writing mixed with the plot, the characters, the setting, the love, heartbreak, magic, war, and so much more are just some of the things that make this sequel an amazing conclusion and definitely the best I’ve read this year.

Most Anticipated Release for the Second Half of the Year

Need I even say anything? Of course this is my most anticipated release for the second half of the year! As it’s my favorite series I’m highly anticipating the release of this fifth book in the series. I need to know what happens next, like, yesterday.

Biggest Disappointment

I know that The Winner’s Curse is a very loved trilogy, but this first book fell really flat for me. The characters felt flat and not very realistic, the plot was kind of dry, and I just couldn’t really get into it. The parts I liked were when Kestrel and Arin were interacting in some romantic way, and a few other parts, but other than that? I’m disappointed.

Biggest Surprise

The Off Campus series by Elle Kennedy definitely surprised me because, as this was my first foray into New Adult, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but the writing, the characters, the setting (Massachusetts, woowoo!), were all very well done and so engrossing. Yes, sometimes I was a little annoyed with how much sex there was, but I still really enjoyed this series (and I’m very excited for the last book coming out in September!).

Favorite New Author

Elise Kova is definitely a new favorite author because of her Air Awakens series. As her debut series is a high fantasy YA/NA story with awesome writing, amazing characters and character development, stunning magic, and cool plots? Yeah, she definitely takes the cake for this one and I highly recommend checking out her series.

Newest Fictional Crush

Aeduan from Truthwitch is definitely my newest fictional crush if we’re talking from the beginning of the year until now. He’s kind of like the villain in the story, but he’s also not because he’s got a lot of secrets that I NEED to know and I just love him so much. I don’t care that he could kill me without even batting an eye, he’s still awesome. I think I love him because of his power, how he thinks, and because he’s like a little brooding baby. Okay, I’m gonna stop now.

Newest Favorite Character

I think I’m going to have to go with the cast of characters in My Lady Jane (which I know is cheating, but I don’t care) because each one is strong in their own right, learns a lot about themselves and the world around them, and they’re just funny. Especially G, he’s probably my favorite from the book. All of them, though, are wonderful characters.

Book That Made You Cry

It’s this little manga series called Orange and it was the most beautiful thing I have read recently about depression and suicide and the importance of friendship. Oh man, this was seriously an amazing book, guys, and I couldn’t recommend it enough. I LITERALLY SOBBED ACTUAL TEARS when I read this. And I never cry when I read. Rarely, if ever. So that’s just saying something with how close it hit home for me.

Book That Made You Happy

I think for this one I’m going to go with The Raven King, even though it simultaneously tore me apart and made me happy. It was a brilliant conclusion and I think that it wrapped up a lot of loose ends really well and it gave us a bit of hope, as readers, to think about where the characters are and what could possibly happen next.

Favorite Book to Film Adaptation

I’m going to be honest: I haven’t seen any book to movie adaptations this year. So, um, yeah, I don’t know how I can answer this one…

Favorite Post You’ve Done This Year

I actually did a whole Top 5 Wednesday topic on this! But I definitely think that my discussion post of Am I A Reader? is probably my definite favorite. It got people thinking about what constitutes calling yourself a reader and why it’s important that we address these issues from time to time.

Most Beautiful Book You’ve Bought This Year

So, if we’re talking aesthetics, I think I’m going to have to go with Hamiltion: The Revolution. I mean… Have you seen this thing in real life? Not only is it massive, but it has deckled edges, really awesome textured paper, beautiful photographs, a classic looking spine, and it’s all about my favorite musical of the year. So, yes, I’m going with this one.

New Release You Haven’t Read Yet But Want To

I just received This Savage Song from Uppercase not that long ago so I definitely want to read it as soon as I can! Monsters, music, no romance? Sounds interesting to me!

What Book Do You NEED to Read By the End of the Year?

There’s a few I could pick for this one, but I’m going to go with The Well of Ascension by Brandon Sanderson, the second book in the Mistborn trilogy. I read the first book last year and absolutely loved it, so I need to know what happens now that a lot of shit went down in the last book. Seriously, I need to know, but the books are so huge… I’ll see if I can read it.

And there you have it! Those are the books I’ve freaked out about and am freaking out about this year. I’ve read a lot of great books and very few disappointments, so I’m really glad I’ve had such a good reading year so far.
