The Future of My Blog & Upcoming Changes

Well hello everyone. How are you all? I haven’t blogged in almost a month and it’s been kind of nice to be away from the blogisphere, I’m not gonna lie, but it also felt weird because I’ve been blogging steadily for over two and half years, and to suddenly stop felt so foreign to me, but I think it was definitely needed.

I’ve seen it said and heard many times that once something, like YouTubing or blogging or even reading, isn’t fun anymore, that you just stop doing it or you need to change something about it so it becomes enjoyable again.

I’m going to be honest here: I’ve read one novel (text-based book) so far this year. One. That’s it. But, I have read a bunch of manga (picture-based books) this year, which has brought me more joy than a regular novel has. And you know what? I’m 100% okay with that. I’ve been a huge fan of manga since I was 12, and I stopped reading for a while, so to get back into it as much as I have? Yeah, that’s a great feeling.

Anyway, that’s an entirely different topic, so let’s just talk about what I wanted to talk about today:

What is the future of this blog going to look like and what changes do I have in store?

I’ve been thinking about it for a while now and I’ve talked it out with my husband and other people, and I’ve come to this conclusion:

  1. I’m tired of just talking about books and book related topics. Don’t get me wrong, books will always be part of my life and this blog, BUT…
  2. I want to talk even more about my other hobbies and passions and likes and interests than before. I want to review anime episodes (because I’ve been watching a LOT of anime lately) and I want to review movies like the live action Beauty and the Beast (which was A-MAZ-ING) and I want to talk about art and my emotions including depression and I want to talk about my desire to travel and conventions I want to go to and cosplay and so, so much more.

It’s not that I’d stop reviewing books or talking about book related things, but I’d be introducing and talking about a LOT more than JUST books on this blog.

And honestly? It’s my blog. I can do whatever the hell I want with it.

If I want to talk about all 76 of my emotions that I felt while watching the first episode of season two of Attack on Titan, then I’m going to do that. If I want to review a manga series like I’ve done in the past, I’m going to do that. If I want to discuss a video game, an art project, or whatever, then I’m going to do that. If I want to do a regular novel review or discussion or tag post, then I’m going to do that.

As this is my own small corner of the internet, I want to include what I love here. This used to be my happy place for a long time, and that changed somewhere along the way. I’m not happy with the content I’d been producing and I want to be able to discuss and do more as a result.

So, what are the upcoming changes that will affect the blog?

Other than what I stated above, I’m contemplating doing a few things:

  • Changing the layout/design of the blog.
  • Changing the name of the blog, as well as the URL.

If anything I would change it to “Rayna Reviews” or something so I can keep the RR logo, but I also might not even change it at all. I’m still a reader, and reading and books will most likely still be my primary focus for the blog, but I just wanted to let you all know of just what I’ve been thinking and why I haven’t been around almost all year thus far.

So thank you all and I hope to still see your lovely faces around even with the changes.

Let’s chat! ^w^

What do you think of the changes? Do you care that I’m going to be introducing these things into my blog? What are your thoughts? Talk to me!

Reading Tastes

So I got the idea of this topic from Riley over on YouTube and thought I’d talk a little bit about reading tastes and how they can change over time.

Now this has happened to all of us at some point in our lives. Many of us started out with picture books and easy to read books, but now, as we’re older, there’s such a vast array of genres and age groups to choose from.

I remember loving simple books as a kid, and now that I’m older I am much more into YA and adult reads, but lately I’ve noticed something: my tastes are changing. I’m definitely over the whole dystopian genre, though I do have a few books I want to get into a see what they’re about; I want to get into more sci-fi kinds of things; I want to read more adult books and see if I can relate more to the characters and their situations or not.

I still highly enjoy and love YA, don’t get me wrong, but there’s something refreshing about reading adult books as an adult. The content is usually a bit more mature, the characters are around the same age, if not older, and the length of descriptions are usually much longer and of better quality.

Notice I keep saying “usually.” Not all adult books are like this, and even YA books can fit the mold.

So what is it about reading tastes that change so much?

I think part of the reason is because as you grow and experience more, you want to experience those same kinds of things through books. To be able to read something and relate to it on a mental, spiritual, and/or emotional level is exhilarating.

I’m not saying that you have to change your tastes to fit your age group, your friends’ taste, what teachers think you might need, or anything like that. But I have noticed that for myself, personally, it’s been a gradual occurance that’s been quite the experience to learn about.

How have your reading tastes changed? What are you into now that you weren’t into a year ago? Have you changed at all? Let me know!

P.S. Don’t forget about the giveaway I’m hosting! It ends August 31st!

Acclimating to Some Changes

Hey guys, I just wanted to give a quick life update because, well, I feel I should let you know what’s going on and why I’ve been kind of quiet on my blog lately, plus some changes I’ve been implementing to my blog (not that it was entirely noticeable, but you know).

At about mid-June I started my new full-time job as a bank teller. I love the job so far (much more than my previous part time job as a cashier at a grocery store, which I’m still doing for now on weekends) and so I’ve been getting used to the long hours each week.

With that said, I’ve felt drained a lot lately. I’m so used to working at sporadic times from my other job that having a steady schedule is new, but glorious territory for me. I’m finding that I’m getting used to the time frames and enjoying what I do more because of the different atmosphere and all that. But I am still tired, meaning I haven’t been reading as much lately.

I feel like a large part of my days have vanished since starting the new job, but at the same time I really haven’t lost much. I’m just trying to get acclimated to my job, which means getting used to a new reading schedule, which I think is the hard part.

What does this mean for you guys? Just that I might not be posting as often as I’ve been trying to before or putting up reviews as much as I was before. I’m still trying to read as many books as I can and want to each month, but it’s slowed down for now while I get used to this new routine.

Plus I’ve been playing Final Fantasy XIII on my husband’s computer a lot lately, so… distractions. Distractions everywhere.

As far as changes with the blog go, I did have a schedule I had been trying to stick to for about five or so months now, but I’ve decided to essentially say screw it and post what I want when I want.

Before, my schedule was like this:

  • Monday: Review day
  • Tuesday: Top 10 Tuesday
  • Wednesday: Top 5 Wednesday
  • Thursday: Review day
  • Friday: Discussion
  • Saturday: Free day
  • Sunday: Free day

Plus days dedicated to wrap-ups and other monthly posts.

I tried to stick to that each week and not veer out of that routine. I thought it was going well, but if I was excited for a discussion topic, or if I wanted a review up right then, I restricted myself to only the days I allotted and didn’t really budge.

And then I thought, why am I doing that? Post whatever you like when you want to.

So here’s my new schedule:

  • Monday: Review day/discussion
  • Tuesday: Top 10 Tuesday/discussion/review
  • Wednesday: Top 5 Wednesday/discussion/review
  • Thursday: Review day
  • Friday: Discussion
  • Saturday: Free day
  • Sunday: Free day

By allowing myself the freedom to host a discussion or review on more than just one or two days I’ve given myself more breathing room.

Free days allow me to post what I want or if I post at all. And then sometimes I don’t feel up to doing the memes like Top 10 Tuesday or T5W. So my weeks vary.

By giving myself more breathing room I’ve felt that I’ve been able to open up more and put out more content for you guys to see. I think that was a big part of why I did what I did and how I did it.

So yeah, those are the two big things going on with the blog and my life right now. I’m not giving up on reading by any means, I’m just slowing down for a bit while I get used to my new lifestyle.

I know this was kind of an “out of the blue” post, but I think you guys deserve to know what’s going on and any changes I may make regarding the blog. Thanks for being awesome!
