I read this book in 2025, and man oh man did I love it. This book deals with the grief that comes along with a parent getting Alzheimer’s, and how it affects not just the person who has it, but yourself as you watch the person you love change forever. It also has a great romance that I loved a lot, so this book just really had everything going for it.

Let’s start with the characters of our romance: Hendrix and Maverick. Hendrix is the last woman of the friend group we’ve been following in this series, and she is such a charming, funny character. She can be over the top at times, but she has plenty of moments where she’s serious or having fun and can stop a room as a result, her natural exuberance drawing people in. She’s ambitious as hell, and works as a manager for several people who are in television or trying to make it as an influencer online (Soledad – one of her friends).

Then there’s Maverick, who’s a self-made billionaire, who always gets what he wants because he works hard for it and knows how to talk. He’s self-assured and kind, empathetic to what Hendrix is going through with her mom as he has his own past with his own mother. He pursues Hendrix because the situation they’re in causes whatever relationship they might have to be forbidden – at least for a time.

I thought the two together were very well balanced, as if they were bouncing off of each other and flowing together like waves might in the ocean. Where she feels weak, he lifts her up; and she does the same when he feels down, as well. The two dance around each other for quite a while before giving in, and let me just say that their romance is hot and steamy. I love the chase aspect of the romance, where he wants her so bad but she’s not ready for the commitment.

Now, not only does the book focus on the romance, but Kennedy Ryan is very good at talking about real issues that women and couples face, together and individually, and how they handle those obstacles as well as push through and potentially overcome them. The hurt might linger, or there will always be some sort of memory or emotion attached with the situation, but Ryan makes a great effort to show her characters are real and can go through real things.

That being said, I can tell Ryan did her research when it came to Alzheimer’s and dementia patients and how it not only affects the one who has the disease, but also the family members and loved ones and what they go through, as well.

And I say this because I went through almost all of the same situations as Hendrix did when my own mom was diagnosed with dementia about ten years ago now. She’s since passed, which is a blessing because you hate to see your loved ones wither away before your eyes, but to read about it in book form? I cried multiple times throughout this story.

I could see myself in Hendrix and the situations she was going through with her mom. How the memory lapses and mood swings affected her mother, but also rattled herself. I could see myself in the terrifying realization that your mother will never be wholly the same or who you knew all of your life anymore.

I knew ahead of time going into this book about the Alzheimer’s representation in here. I had braced for it, and yet I wasn’t ready to read this book when it came out in May of 2025. It took me many months to work up the courage and resilience to be able to read this book, and I’m so, so glad I did. Kennedy Ryan did an amazing and gentle job of showing what it’s like for someone to go through something like this. I’m so grateful to have been able to read this book and see myself so wholly reflected in those moments with Hendrix and her mom.

Of course, there’s some other threads of things that go on throughout the book, but the romance and the dementia were the two major plot points of this story. There were ups and downs, there were conflicts and resolutions, and it was so heartwarming to see such an outpouring of love from many of Hendrix’s friends and family about the situation around her. You can tell that Hendrix really makes an impact in people’s lives, and how they reciprocate in kind.

I really, really enjoyed this story. From beginning to end, it was such a delight to read, and helped me go through grief as I navigated my own memories while I was reading it. If I ever get to meet Kennedy Ryan someday, I want to thank her for being so kind and doing her research regarding this topic.

If you couldn’t tell, I highly recommend this book, and I do suggest reading these books in publication order: Before I Let Go, This Could Be Us, and then Can’t Get Enough. You’ll see the true impact of these women in each other’s lives and how the men in them are a boon, helping lift them up and encouraging them to be themselves unapologetically.
