  • Top Ten Tuesday: Happy Thanksgiving!

Hey peeps and welcome to another Top Ten Tuesday as hosted by the lovely people over at The Broke & the Bookish. This week is all about what we’re thankful for because here in the U.S.A. is the week of Thanksgiving (which is on the 24th). So today I’m going to do two categories: a) bookish things I’m thankful for having in my life, and b) things I’m thankful for in my personal life. Let’s go!

    Bookish Things I’m Thankful For…

    1. I was able to attend three book signings this year. I think that that’s incredible because I haven’t been to a book signing since Eclipse by Stephenie Meyer came out YEARS ago. And each signing was a blast and much better than that first experience.

    2. I got to meet my favorite author at one of those said signings. Sarah J. Maas was so sweet and so fun to listen to during her chat. I asked her what quote from her books I should get as a tattoo, and she named a few I already loved, and yes, I will be getting one soon.

    3. Giveaways! Yes, I’ve actually won a couple, which is cool. They may have been swag or for a coloring book, but it was still cool to be able to win something since it doesn’t happen often.

    4. Getting a subscription box almost each month. It’s always so fun opening the boxes and seeing what’s inside. It’s like my birthday is every month when I get one!

    5. To have such a wonderful community to connect with. Seriously, everyone I’ve met in the book community has been amazingly nice, compassionate, and friendly. I’ve made some friends with people and I think that that’s so cool, how our common love of books brought us all together.

    Personal Things I’m Thankful For…

    6. Family. Things kind of took a major downhill turn in my family, but we’re coping and dealing with it every day. It’s not 100% better, but we make do with what we can, and that’s all we can ask for. And other than that, my family is great at caring and wanting to be there to help, which is great.

    7. My husband. I know he can be lumped into the family category, but I want to put him in his own spot because I love him very much, and through all of the family stuff he’s been my constant rock and I appreciate him so much for that.

    8. My best friend. She stepped up to the plate and offered to help when my family kind of crumbled, and I’m very thankful to her for that. She’s over every week, and she helps by just being here. I don’t know what I’d do without her and I love her very much.

    9. I’ve been at my current job for over a year. I mean, I was at my previous one for almost six years, but still, this is a “big girl” job and I’m glad to say I’ve made it past the one year mark by a few months. I also appreciate that I get praise and appreciated there because I’m an efficient worker and I get things done.

    10. For this blog and the community that I’m in. As I stated before, this community is amazing and I love that I’m part of it. But not only that, but I’m just grateful that I’ve been running this blog for over two years, and I love it so very much. It gives me a place to feel like I belong, a place where I can go to be calm, a place that I can call my own and design and use how I wish. I’m so thankful to those who read this blog, comment, and to just have a space to call mine on the Internet.

    Let’s Chat! ≧◡≦

Happy Thanksgiving! How do you celebrate? Do you have a big family gathering, or is it smaller and more quaint? What are you most thankful for this year?

  • NaNoWriMo 2016 Week 3 – Your Writing Is Worth It

    nanowrimo_2016_webbanner_participant

This week was MUCH better in terms of how much I wrote and meeting goals and all of that. I’m kicking butt and having a blast doing it, that’s for sure! I plan to shut myself off from the world again today, so I’m hoping that I can write another 10k words. Even I only get another 5k I’ll be happy, but my goal is to just write until I can’t anymore. Of course, now that I have Pokemon Sun, I’m very distracted (hence not writing the past three days). At least I gave myself a buffer.

    Goal

50,000 words total by the end of November 30th.

My average daily goal is to write 1,667 words.

    Stats for Week 3

    Day 13: 11,551 words
    Day 14: 2,135 words
    Day 15: 2,441 words
    Day 16: 4,795 words
    Day 17: 0 words
    Day 18: 0 words
    Day 19: 1,777 words

    Total Words: 37,083 words

*I’m not including today, November 20th, as the day is not over yet. Today’s word count will be in next week’s recap.

This Week’s Advice: Your Writing Is Worth It

At this point in NaNo you may be feeling like your writing sucks. Not just your writing, though, but the story itself. Maybe you veered off course from what you wanted to write in the first place, or maybe you just can’t seem to bring the right words to the page. I just want you to know: it’s okay. Your first draft is supposed to suck. Remember: you’re not in school. This isn’t going to be graded. It doesn’t need to be perfect right off the bat. This is for fun, for YOU, so keep that in mind as you write.

What I also want you to keep in mind is that your writing is worth it. Every word, sentence, paragraph, and chapter that you write is a step closer to your ultimate goal: a completed manuscript. Or maybe your goal isn’t a completed manuscript, but it’s to reach 50k words. Or maybe it’s to see how many fight scenes you can put in before you ask how much is too much. Whatever your goal might be, it’s worth it. Keep taking those steps, writing those words and paragraphs, and keep writing. Strive for the highest that you can achieve – then strive higher than that.

But I want you to remember the most important of all of these things: do this for YOU. No one else. Just you.

    Let’s Chat! ≧◡≦

We’ve survived the first three weeks of NaNoWriMo! It’s a weird time because there’s still a week and a half left, so it’s like we’ve got five weeks of writing, but hey! We’re over the hump! Take the time to celebrate and to reward yourself for each milestone that you pass. Little rewards can add up, and you need to keep your morale up. Tell me all of the things! How’s your progress? How are your characters getting along? Are you finding the words to tell everything you need to tell? Let me know!

  • Beautiful Books – Novel Update

    beautifulbooks

Hey peeps and welcome to Beautiful Books, hosted by the lovely Cait @ Paper Fury and Sky @ Further Up & Further In. What is Beautiful Books? It’s very similar to the monthly link up of Beautiful People, but this month it focuses on NaNoWriMo writing projects rather than specific characters in the novels. You obviously don’t have to be participating in NaNo in order to join; it can be any writing project. Click here or the picture to be taken back to the most recent Beautiful Books linkup page!

It’s time for an update! We’re already halfway through the month (a little over, actually) and many of us participating in NaNoWriMo have been writing furiously (or like me and didn’t write for a solid week, ughhhhh). I’m writing this on Sunday the 13th, so I should be farther along than what I was at today (she says hopefully), but let’s talk about some of the updates with me and my novel!

If you want to check out what my novel’s about, you can check out my previous Beautiful Books post, or my NaNo announcement post!

    1. Overall, how is your mental state, and how is your novel going?

Well, my mental state is improving now that I’m actually writing again. I didn’t write a single word last week; I had zero motivation to do anything. Instead I had watched anime, read some books, and did anything but write. Even when I told myself to write, I didn’t. I don’t really know why. I just couldn’t bring myself to do it? But now that I’m doing it again, I feel like I can actually do this. If I keep reaching little milestones, it’s like I’ve accomplished something, and I love that feeling.

As far as my novel, it’s proceeding as planned! I used to hate outlining, but now that I’ve done it and I’m actually following along with it? It feels amazing! I may deviate from what I have written in the outline, but I’m still coming back to the key points that I have listed, and I think that’s the most important part. And I know I have a butt ton I need to fix, but that’ll come later.

    2. What’s your first sentence (or first paragraph)?

    Here’s my first paragraph:

The museum is quiet, all but for the ticking of the grandfather clock in the main lobby and the occasional shuffle of feet as patrolmen walk up and down corridors and through exhibits. It’s just another night in the Rising City, I reassure myself, and take a deep breath. Getting in was the easy part; getting the ruby and getting out are going to be just a smidge more difficult.

    3. Who’s your current favorite character in your novel?

Currently my favorite character is probably Nara. I love both Nara and Mikail equally, but I love her sass and how she keeps trying to find humor in things.

    4. What do you love about your novel so far?

I love that it’s actually going in the direction I wanted it to go. I also love that I get to see it being fleshed out and how I’m working out in my head and on paper (computer) what’s going to happen next. Even though I know I’m going to have things that I’m going to need to fix down the road, right now I’m seeing it turning into something other than just an idea in my head – and that feels amazing.

    5. Have you made any hilarious typos or other mistakes?

Nope, I don’t think so. Nothing hilarious, anyway. Just typos, things I need to fix or change around.

    6. What is your favorite to write: beginning, middle, or end – and why?

I find that I can start my story with BANG. Like, I can shoot out of that starting gate at full speed, no turning back. But as I get closer to the middle I slow way the hell down and there’s more for me to figure out. The end is such a blur that I can’t even see it at all. It’s weird to think about, really. I find that that’s the same with every novel I wrote. I can picture the beginning perfectly, but the end? Forget it. The middle is murky at best, and I can see just certain scenes clearly in my head, but otherwise there’s nothing really there. I just have to see where my characters take me and see how the world develops as a result.

    7. What are your writing habits? Is there a specific snack you eat? Do you listen to music? What time of day do you write best? Feel free to show us a picture of your writing space!

I’m not going to show a picture of my writing space because my desk is HELLA messy, but some of my writing habits include: wearing my NaNo merch (seriously, they’re magical), listening to instrumental music, and I think my best writing time is morning/afternoon. So when I have work during the days it’s very hard for me to pick up writing at night because everyone’s home and bugging me or making noise and I’m distracted and then my husband wants to watch anime that I love…

    It’s honestly annoying.

    8. How private are you about your novel while you’re writing? Do you need a cheer squad or do you work alone (like, ahem, Batman)?

My husband says I don’t like to share what I’ve written yet, but he doesn’t even ask, so why would I share? I mean, I would if he asked.

I like the cheer squad! I like it when I post updates to Twitter and others are cheering me on and I cheer them on. It’s good morale!

    9. What keeps you writing even when it’s hard?

Well, as you could tell from my week 2 progress, uhhh… I don’t? I mean, I know it gets hard and everything, and I just sort of give up. And sometimes those “giving up” moments last months and months. But now? Now I think about a few things:

    • This is something I want to do as a career. I can’t just NOT do it.
    • I have fun when I’m writing, so why do I stop? Life gets in the way, and I obviously need to enjoy more things outside of it, but when I’m in it, why do I stop?
    • What would future me tell past me? Would I be happy with where I was, or disappointed in myself?

These are all hard questions and statements and hard to answer, but I DO want to be an author. I DO have lots of fun writing and seeing what I can come up with in my own way. And I would tell my past self to not give up, because what’s the point in that? It takes hard work to get anywhere, you’re not going to have things handed to you all the time, so why wait?

    10. What are your top three pieces of writing advice?

Hmm, let’s see here. Here are some things I would not just tell others, but myself as well:

    1. Have fun writing. I know it’s kind of one of those things that every writer ever drills into others all the time, but it’s true: if you’re not having fun writing, then why are you even doing it? Maybe it’s not the right time to write that particular story, or maybe you’re writing in the wrong perspective, with the wrong character, or even in the wrong world. Think about your writing time: are you having fun?
    2. Don’t compare your progress to others’ success. Some people write hella fast and they’re able to get a 100k novel written in a month, while you’re still struggling with the first 20k words. That’s okay! You don’t have to worry about that. They just write at a different pace than you. You’re successful in that you made it as far as you have, so don’t give up.
    3. Write the story YOU want to read. This is another one that’s always spread around, and it’s true: write the story you want to read about. No one else can tell it like you can, and maybe someone also wants the same story idea. So write!

So there you have it, peeps. Writing it going as well as it can and I’m not going to stop just because I convinced myself there was no point in catching up. CLEARLY I was wrong. I want to do this, and I’m going to do this, and I need to stop wallowing and bring myself back up.

I can do this, you can do this, so keep your chin up!

  • Top Ten Tuesday: Favorite Movies

Hey peeps and welcome to another Top Ten Tuesday as hosted by the lovely people over at The Broke & the Bookish. The topic for this week is a movie freebie, so we could talk about anything we wanted regarding movies. So I figured I’d just talk about my favorite movies of all time, pretty much. There’s so many great ones out there, but these all hold a special place in my heart.

    1. Inside Out – When I first saw this movie, I sobbed. I sobbed the second and third time, too, because this movie touched a very special place in my heart. I loved how the creators decided to take the perspective from emotions and give it a twist. It was amazing how it was told and how it ended. It’s beautiful.

    2. Zootopia – This was an especially important film that came out because it talked about racial division (or, in this case, species division), police brutality, Black Lives Matter, social norms, and more. It was incredible, and it was told in a fun story way in which I never lost interest and I needed to know what was going to happen next.

    3. Princess Mononoke – This was my first PG-13 film, I think, and I saw it when I was seven. And it captivated me then as much as it does now. The plot is amazing and it speaks volumes even today, the animation is incredible, and the characters are some you want to root for – or strangle. It’s breathtaking and you should really watch it.

    4. The Notebook – I mean… How can I not have this on here? As I love romance, this is definitely one of my favorite movies when it comes to romance. I love the story, the acting, the time in which it was set. All of it was incredible and excuse me while I sob because THAT ENDING.

    5. Jurassic Park – I probably lied about the PG-13 movie thing, but I LOVE the Jurassic Park franchise (even though I haven’t seen the newest one yet…). I’ve always been into dinosaurs, long before I ever saw these movies, and they just enhanced my interest in them immensely. There was a time when I was a child that I would pour myself over books and internet articles and learn as much as I could about dinosaurs and the time in which they lived. This movie was amazing and was such a step from the norm of movies.

    6. Howl’s Moving Castle – I’ve watched this movie so many times that I have a lot of the lines memorized. It’s kind of a problem. But I love this one to the moon and back and it’s honestly one of the best movies I’ve ever seen. The story, the animation, the romance, the characters, the art! It’s a masterpiece.

    7. Spirited Away – Another Miyazaki film, who’d have thought. This movie has so much mystery and history and hidden gems that I love. It’s full of so much wonder, hope, and love. I love this movie so much.

    8. Up – This was the movie I saw on our one year anniversary of being together back in the day when my husband and I were dating. We make it a point every year to see whatever Disney movie has come out, even though we may have missed a few. But this movie is one that I love because the characters are so funny, the story is both heartbreaking and hopeful, and it’s just a great tale of achieving dreams.

    9. Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens – This. Movie. Was. Epic. I loved it so much. The second time I saw it I enjoyed it so much more and I think it’s just one of those movies that gets better the more you see it. It touched on the nostalgia of the earlier movies while giving a new storyline and awesome characters. Seriously: love it.

    10. Wall-E – This was actually the first movie I saw with my husband when we first started dating. I think it was actually our first date. xD I love this movie for what it talks about because I love our earth and we need to do what we can to keep it safe for everyone and everything on it. Plus the animation is incredible and the story is captivating, too.

    11. Kiki’s Delivery Service – More Miyazaki! Kiki is such a fun, heartwarming story of a young witch going out in the world trying to discover her potential as a witch, and there are bumps along the way, but she learns from them and I think that it’s such a great story of hope and never giving up.

    12. My Neighbor Totoro – This one is just so cute and I love Totoro! I love all of the symoblism that Miyazaki includes in his stories and how the animators are able to bring these stories to life is incredible. It’s such a cute story that includes two young sisters, their dad, and Totoro, a forest spirit. It’s a fun adventure and you just need to see it.

    Let’s Chat! ≧◡≦

Well, this turned into a very Disney/Ghibli oriented posted, but I love both of those companies, so I’m fine with that. What are some of your all time favorite movies? Have you seen any on my list?

  • November Uppercase Box Unboxing

Hey peeps, I’m here with another Uppercase Box unboxing for you! If you don’t know what Uppercase is, as it says on the website, it’s “a young adult book-of-the-month subscription box. Simply put: You sign up and receive a recently published YA book and awesome book-related items every month! Plus you’ll access exclusive book content and a one-of-a-kind reading experience to dive deeper into each story.”

I haven’t had a box the last two months what with moving and stuff, but I missed getting a box every month, so I picked it back up! Either way I’m excited for this month’s box (even though I bought the exact same book the exact same day before I got my box! so sad).

    img_3998

What was included in this month’s box was:

    • The Sun is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon – SIGNED
    • The Sun is Also a Star temporary tattoo
    • Harry Potter cookie cutters from Frosted Co.
    • Greeting card set from 9th Letter Press (Uppercase Exclusive)
    • Carve the Mark chapter sampler

These cards are adorable and I can’t WAIT to make fun cookies with the HP cookie cutters! Ahh! I’m also extremely excited to read the book because I really enjoyed her debut novel last year.

    Here’s the synopsis:

Natasha: I’m a girl who believes in science and facts. Not fate. Not destiny. Or dreams that will never come true. I’m definitely not the kind of girl who meets a cute boy on a crowded New York City street and falls in love with him. Not when my family is twelve hours away from being deported to Jamaica. Falling in love with him won’t be my story.

Daniel: I’ve always been the good son, the good student, living up to my parents’ high expectations. Never the poet. Or the dreamer. But when I see her, I forget about all that. Something about Natasha makes me think that fate has something much more extraordinary in store—for both of us.

The Universe: Every moment in our lives has brought us to this single moment. A million futures lie before us. Which one will come true?

Doesn’t it sound good? I can’t wait to read it.

    Let’s Chat! ≧◡≦

Have you read the book yet? What did you think? I’d share my HP shaped cookies with you all, but alas, they’d be in my belly before they could get to you. Do you believe in fate or are you more of a science and fact person like Natasha?
