Month: November 2016

  • November 2016 Wrap Up

    Happy Thanksgiving!

What a fast month! Seriously, in the blink of an eye we’ve already passed Thanksgiving (for us Americans), gone through the Presidential election (let’s not talk about it, okay?), a second wedding anniversary (yay!), and now it’s practically the holiday season! This year has flown by. I think my mind’s still back in March or April, so pardon the dust. But this month was a month of writing (and failing, and I’m fine with that), of reading fun and fantastic books, and just overall enjoyment.

    • Illuminae by Jay Kristoff & Amie Kaufman – Was a fantastic, unique, brilliant book! I laughed, I cried, I felt emotions for characters I didn’t expect to feel for, and it was amazing. 5/5 stars!
    • P.S. I Like You by Kasie West – This was so cute and I felt that it was really realistic to how a relationship could start in high school. 5/5 stars!
    • Scarlet by Marissa Meyer – What a great sequel! I loved the sci-fi elements, the story, and the new characters introduced. 4.5/5 stars!

    Fun Things

    fof-button-2016

31/30. I surprisingly haven’t read any fantasy books this month, which is fine! I’ve still surpassed my goal, which I’m proud of. For those participating, tell me how you’ve been doing!

    Instagram

So over on my Instagram I participated in four different challenges this month! It was crazy, but I did most of the days and combined two or more of the challenges in one pic, usually doing two a day. It was super fun and next month I’m participating in four again! Also: I love the bookstagram community. Like the rest of the book community, they’re all really sweet, talented people.

     Around the Internet

This is a feature I’ve seen in several other blogger’s wrap ups and I think it’s a fun way to show what else I’ve been reading/seeing around the internets!

    • Hazel of Stay Bookish talked about being a fat girl and how a book helped her stand up to body shaming.
    • Nicola Yoon’s Everything, Everything movie adaptation has a release date of August 18, 2017 (my birthday!).
    • #TheThanksUGive was a fun chat where a lot of the book community came together to talk about the thanks we give to others in the community, from bloggers to authors and more.
    • Maggie Stiefvater answered the important question: main character’s facial features of how they are in the books (The Raven Cycle).

    Life Updates

    • My husband and mine’s second wedding anniversary happened and we spent the day in Boston, specifically Brookline because there’s an independent bookstore there that I love. We had a good time and enjoyed ourselves, which was great. We got series one Apple iWatches which are pretty cool. I keep forgetting to wear mine, though, because I’m still not used to wearing something on my wrist all the time. Whoops.
    • I saw Moana and it was glorious and I need to see it again. Like now. Right this second. The story was captivating and spoke to me so deeply to my core. The art was stunning and very well made. The representation of the Pacific Islander peoples was amazing to see! It was so fantastic and I highly recommend you check it out.
    • I also saw Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. It was cute. Predictable, but cute. It was also kind of long and I couldn’t understand Newt a lot because his accent was so thick, but I loved the creatures and getting a little more backstory of the wizarding world.
    • I got Pokemon Sun and have been perpetually distracted by the game since getting it. My team consists of Primarina, Arcanine, Minikyu, Sylveon, Magneton, and Zygarde. I love my team to bits and struggle swapping any of them out for whatever reason. Are you playing one of the new Pokemon games? Tell me your team and which game you’re playing!

  • Top Ten Tuesday: Holiday Gift Guide – Small Businesses

Hey peeps and welcome to another Top Ten Tuesday as hosted by the lovely people over at The Broke & the Bookish. So today’s topic is a holiday gift guide! I did one last year where it was much broader and I talked about several things you can get the book lover in your life, so today I thought I’d talk about some small businesses that you should definitely check out for the bookish lover in your life!

    1. Evie Bookish – Evie has such a talent when it comes to bookish designs! I love her products a lot (I’m expecting my second one by her soon) and I think she’s definitely worth checking out and potentially ordering something from.

    2. Paper Fury – Cait is not only the Queen of Everything, but she also has a shop with bookish and writing related items! Her sassy self comes out even in her products, which are adorable and so fun.

    3. Muggle Library Candles – This lovely little shop makes bookish inspired candles in 4oz and 9oz sizes! I’m expecting my first candle from them soon, but I’m so excited! They have scents like The Night Lord, AIDAN, The Forbidden Forest, and more. Plus, some of their candles sparkle, and if you’re a shiny/sparkle lover like me, then this is the shop for you.

    4. Novel Ink Designs – She does some really cool stuff with bookmarks and other book inspired things! I believe some of her bookmarks are made by burning? Don’t quote me on that, but they’re customizable and super cute!

    5. Novelly Yours – More candles! These candles are so cute and there are so. Many. Scents. Like, how could you choose just one? Plus they’re super affordable and from what I hear they smell amazing. One day I’ll own a mini collection!

    6. Novel Heartbeat – Even more candles! Jessi also does custom made orders and necklaces and clay dragons. Her shop is also just as cute, so check it out!

    7. Bookworm Boutique – Lauren has cute bookish related items up on Society 6 that are simpler in design if you’re more into the minimalistic stuff. Lots of phrases, Harry Potter, and more await there!

    8. Happy Hello! – THE CUTEST BOOKMARKS OF EVER. I swear, you won’t be able to resist them. Why don’t I have any in my own life? I need them. She offers a lot from series with multiple characters, so your fangirl/boy heart will be forever happy.

    9. Uppercase Box – Yes, my favorite monthly subscription! I love the bookish swag, the awesome signed books, and just being able to see what will come each month. It’s so fun and I definitely recommend checking them out!

    10. Fairyloot – Another fun monthly book subscription box that is very pretty and hosts a lot of fun items each month. I’ve seen a lot of the boxes since they launched and I SO want one!

  • Scarlet Book Review

    scarletTitle: Scarlet
    Series: The Lunar Chronicles #2
    Author: Marissa Meyer
    Publisher: Square Fish
    Publication Date: February 5, 2013
Genre: Young Adult – Science Fiction, Retellings
    Pages: 452
    Format: Purchased Paperback

Cinder is back and trying to break out of prison—even though she’ll be the Commonwealth’s most wanted fugitive if she does—in this second installment from Marissa Meyer.

Halfway around the world, Scarlet Benoit’s grandmother is missing. It turns out there are many things Scarlet doesn’t know about her grandmother, or the grave danger she has lived in her whole life. When Scarlet encounters Wolf, a street fighter who may have information as to her grandmother’s whereabouts, she is loath to trust this stranger, but is inexplicably drawn to him, and he to her. As Scarlet and Wolf unravel one mystery, they encounter another when they meet Cinder. Now, all of them must stay one step ahead of the vicious Lunar Queen Levana.

As this is a sequel there may be spoilers.

Guys. This sequel. I was so enthralled with reading it, needing to turn the page to know what happened next, that I read it in under 12 hours. That’s right: I read it in one sitting. ME. A SLOW READER. HOW. I don’t know. But anyway, that’s not the point of this review. The point of this review is to inform you: I enjoyed this more than Cinder.

When I read the first book of the saga last year I didn’t get the hype. I don’t know what it was, but I ended up putting off this sequel for a long time as a result. And now I regret not picking it up sooner because this sequel was one that drew me in, kept me on the edge of my seat, made me laugh, go “WHAT THE HELL,” and so much more.

I knew that the fairytale retelling element in this book was all about Little Red Riding Hood. I wasn’t sure how the elements of the story were going to be incorporated into this world, but I think Marissa Meyer did a really great job of showing the elements without outright saying what it was! Scarlet (other than her name) had a favorite red hoodie that her Grandmother had given her, and then there was Wolf who had a lot of surprises and secrets of his own. I also loved seeing Cinder in there (she grew on me in this book) and seeing her work at being a mechanic and use her sass and wits in many situations. She wasn’t perfect, which I appreciated. And THORNE. I LOVE HIM.

So let’s talk about some of the things that happened, yeah?

When the book started out with Scarlet in an alleyway delivering produce from her Granny’s farm – and the fact that her Grandmother had been missing – was an instant hook for me. Scarlet had a fierce love and loyalty to her grandmother that I thought was so unseen in many YA novels, so I highly appreciated it. Scarlet has a temper which she tries to control, but sometimes it slips through her fingers and she unleashes her anger on the inanimate things around her (or people, depending on the situation). I thought it was endearing. Scarlet’s resolve to find her grandmother was inspiring, honestly. Her fierce determination was a constant in this book, even when she faced betrayal and imprisonment.

Wolf was a mystery from the start. I couldn’t place my finger on it, but something in me knew that something was going to happen for him to betray Scarlet. He wasn’t anything like the “Big Bad Wolf” that I was expecting – you know, strong, distant, cold, fearless. No, he was much more timid and wary, super cautious. But he was definitely strong, that’s for sure. When circumstances unfolded and it was revealed who and what he was, I was a) shocked, and b) in disbelief. There were so many questions running through my mind and I didn’t know how to place them.

Also, I’m forever shipping Scarlet and Wolf because they’re EFFING ADORABLE, OKAY?

Anywho, then we have Cinder who I don’t remember if I was impressed with or not in the last novel. But in this novel I felt much more attached to her, like what she was fighting for, what she was struggling with and what she wanted to do not only for herself, but for others, was purposeful and I wanted to see her achieve. I loved her sarcasm and wit, and I also liked the fact that she doesn’t have complete control over her powers, that they’re so underused that she doesn’t completely understand how to use them. And that she feels guilty when she does use them. I find that makes her realer than I was expecting. I also just love the mechanic aspect of hers because a) I love female mechanics in stories, and b) I find those scenes extremely fascinating given that she’s a cyborg and can use her own body to do so many things. It’s so cool!

And then we have Captain Carswell Thorne. I love him. That is all.

No, but seriously, he was so hilarious and charming, but he was also strong and smart in his own ways, even if he did act dumb a lot of the time. Does that make sense? Either way, I thought Thorne was kind of like the much needed comedy relief in this story? He had his uses, don’t get me wrong, but a lot of what came out of his mouth was really funny. I highly appreciated him and need more of him, thanks.

Kai was struggling so much in this novel and it makes me wonder what’s going to go down in the next two books now that he’s made a decision about something huge. I’m glad to see that he still cares about Cinder despite everything that happened and despite how much he tries to deny it, even to himself. I think that his role will become greater AND I have a theory about one of his advisors. Hmm.

I was surprised to see a chapter from Queen Levana’s point of view! It was interesting to see how observatory she is and how her mind works, even in that little snippet. I’m interested to see if we’ll see more from her point of view in the next books.

The plot of the book was centrally geared around Scarlet saving her grandmother and Cinder finding Scarlet’s mother for answers. It was fast paced and definitely upped the ante of the book. I thought that the plot of the book and the dangers within them were definitely heightened given that Cinder is now a fugitive, and that the story itself was well done. I did have some questions, though, at some points where I was like, “But why are you doing that?” that had me unsure of what I wanted to rate this. Also how things took place in only a matter of days and a few certain romantic things happened (which I’m totally fine with and was glad that even the characters acknowledged the short time span of things).

I rated this book 4.5/5 stars and highly recommend it!

  • NaNoWriMo 2016 Week 4 – Take a Break

    nanowrimo_2016_webbanner_participant

I’m sensing a pattern here… I seem to be able to write nonstop every other week and then just not write for a week straight. This past week was particularly difficult what with the holiday and I’ve just been so incredibly tired. I just want to sleep constantly and I don’t know why. So I didn’t write any words this week, but I’m okay with that. I mean, I’m not, but I’ve accepted that life happens and it’s going to happen. If you’re stuck in a rut too, I hear ya. But we’ve got a few days left, so let’s make it count, yeah?

    Goal

50,000 words total by the end of November 30th.

My average daily goal is to write 1,667 words.

    Stats for Week 4

    Day 20: 0 words
    Day 21: 0 words
    Day 22: 0 words
    Day 23: 0 words
    Day 24: 0 words
    Day 25: 0 words
    Day 26: 0 words

    Total Words: 37,083 words

*I’m not including today, November 27th, as the day is not over yet. Today’s word count will be in next week’s recap.

This Week’s Advice: Take a Break

It’s probably not what you wanted or were expecting to hear this week. I don’t mean do what I do and take a week off in between writing; I mean give yourself a break. A few hours, a couple minutes, or a whole day. Your brain needs to rest if it’s going to keep giving you words to write, so you need to give it the rest it deserves and needs.

Sometimes it’s more beneficial than just chugging along to reach the word count or to reach your own personal goals. We all can’t chug out a crap ton of words in a single day. That’s fine! You have to do what you can and accept it and go with it. Don’t get discouraged if you fall behind as a result. Even if you don’t win, look at the progress you’ve made. Look at it! You’ve done that all on your own. So give yourself a much needed break and relax for a little while.

That being said, though, don’t just drop writing completely. I mean, look at my progress above: NOTHING written this week. Zero. Zilch. It happens. I’m not going to let it get me down. I’ll power through if I have to, but even if I don’t, I’m still very happy with the progress I’ve made this month and I’m so glad I decided to participate in NaNoWriMo this year.

Keep going! But take the breaks you need. Read a book, go for a walk, play with your dog/kid/guinea pig, play a video game, watch movies (Moana was amazing, go see it), but above all: don’t stress. R E L A X. I know it can be hard, but you can’t strain yourself over it.

    Let’s Chat! ≧◡≦

How has this week gone for you? We’re in the home stretch! Are you excited? Did you already reach 50k? How much more do you have to go? What are you doing to take a break during this time? Let me know!

  • Beat the Backlist Challenge

    btbchallengeslider

Hey peeps! So I’m here today with a challenge that my friend Austine from Novel Knight is hosting next year: the Beat the Backlist reading challenge! This challenge is a fun way to read those books on your shelves that have been sitting there for way too long. You know, books that aren’t new releases. A lot of people (myself included) focus a lot on newer releases, but this is a fun, engaging way to read those books that you really want to read but may have fallen to the wayside since.

Here’s the guidelines and stuff if you want to participate:

    • Date: January 1 through December 31, 2017
    • Rules: Books must be released prior to 2017!

That’s it! It’s as simple as that. If you use Twitter you can post updates with #beatthebacklist

    btbhpinfoslider

Austine is also have a mini-challenge that I am definitely joining in and that is the Win the House Cup mini-challenge! This mini-challenge is OPTIONAL. It’s just a fun way to see which House reads more!

I’ll be going for Hufflepuff as I am a Hufflepuff and I’m super excited to join in this challenge! Not gonna lie: this mini-challenge was the extra push I needed to join the backlist challenge. (I mean, I was going to join anyway, but this was just added incentive.)

You can read about how to earn points for your house here!

So if you want to join, go check out the sign up post! But now I’m going to talk about the books that I’m hoping to read next year toward this challenge.

    Overall Goal: 20 books

    Books for the Challenge

    • Scarlet by Marissa Meyer
    • Cress
    • Winter
    • Harry Potter & the Goblet of Fire by J.K. Rowling
    • Harry Potter & the Order of the Phoenix
    • Harry Potter & the Half-Blood Prince
    • Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows
    • Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare
    • Clockwork Princess
    • City of Lost Souls
    • City of Heavenly Fire
    • Lady Midnight
    • Carry On by Rainbow Rowell
    • Gathering Darkness by Morgan Rhodes
    • Frozen Tides
    • The Well of Ascension by Brandon Sanderson
    • The Hero of Ages
    • A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin
    • Splintered by A.G. Howard
    • Unhinged
    • Ensnared
    • Untamed
    • The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
    • Literally any book I’ve started before, put down, forgot about, and haven’t finished. Which is a lot.

Okay, so this list is 23 books long, but uh… I could keep going. Seriously. I have so many books that are on my backlist that I really, REALLY do want to get to! So I’m going to use this challenge as a way to do so. The list above is also not set in stone. I’m going to read whatever I want next year (as I do every year), so this list is more like a guideline than a rulebook. *insert Pirates of the Caribbean quote here*

I hope some of you will want to join me and others in this challenge! It seems really fun, and since it’s a year long it’s a pretty relaxing one.

    Let’s Chat! ≧◡≦

What do you think of this challenge? Will you be joining in? What are some books that haven’t been released recently that you’ve been meaning to get to but haven’t yet?
