  • Two Years of Blogging Celebration + Giveaway

    twoyears

That’s right! My blog is officially two years old! I can’t believe it. I never thought that I’d become a blogger – a passionate blogger – let alone a book blogger. But I am so happy to be here sharing my thoughts, feelings, and passions with all of you.

When I started blogging two years ago, I was nervous. Excited, but nervous. Would people even look at my blog? Comment on my stuff? Interact with me? I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t doing it for the “fame” in the beginning, because who doesn’t want their five minutes, you know? But pretty soon after I started I fell in love with it. Interacting with all of you – my peeps – is one of the joys that brings me back to my blog every day. I love seeing comments and commenting on other’s blogs (which I still need to work on, I know!), and then interacting on Twitter and Instagram… it’s so worth it!

I fell in love with books all over again because of blogging and book community. Not only is the book community the most welcoming community I’ve ever seen on the Internet, but there’s also so many passionate and diverse voices here that it sparked my love for reading all over again. Once people were excited over a book, so was I! It was fun to talk about and gush or gripe over books – and it still is!

When my first blogiversary came around, my numbers and content (and amount of books on my shelves) were much smaller than they are now, but I was still so grateful to have faithfully stuck with book blogging and having those connections with people and books and more.

Now, two years after I started blogging, I’m so excited to see how far I’ve come and where I can see myself going. I’ve had such a great time this past year and I have some of those milestones to share with you.

    What Happened This Last Year

    • Between July last year and July this year I’ve read and reviewed 57 books, novellas, short stories, and audiobooks. That’s a lot for me and I am so amazed at how far I’ve come in that time!
    • I’ve had 43 discussions. Wow. I had a lot to say, apparently!
    • I went to my first author book signings in YEARS and got to meet my favorite author. Actually I went to three: Jodi Meadows and Erin Bowman, Sarah J. Maas, and Maggie Steifvater! All of the authors were so lovely and nice.
    • I participated in a lot more events and readathons, like Love-a-thon, Make Me Read, and more.
    • I even started the ToGReadalong with some bookish friends!
    • I’ve met more awesome bookish people through Twitter chats, which I am very thankful for. Such Twitter chats have been #BBTC and #RQWN.

    What I’m Looking Forward To

    • Reading more books! I feel like I never have enough time in my day to read as much as I want anymore, but I hope to just continue reading and having fun doing it.
    • I’m obviously going to keep posting more on my blog, but I want to do some new and different things in the next year. I’m going to look into different things so they’ll be a surprise when/if they happen!
    • I’ve been neglecting my YouTube channel, and I don’t know if I’ll continue to make videos or not, so I’m going to be debating on an upload schedule and trying to stick to it.
    • Go to more book signings and events! I’m going to make it my mission to go to some sort of book convention whether it be this year or next year, but I really want to go and meet so many people!

    The Giveaway

I’m giving away a $25USD gift card to Society6! You’ll be able to choose whatever design and item you want up to $25 (any additional fees are up to you to pay). A Big Thank You

I feel like this year is going to get better, just like how I thought last year that it would get better – and it has! I’m so excited to be part of such an awesome community and I just want to thank you all for being part of this journey with me. You’re all lovely and beautiful and my peeps (yes, the fluffy marshmallow chicks). Thank you all for sticking around and I hope to have many more conversations with you all and continue to grow and be passionate and have more fun than before.

  • July Uppercase Box Unboxing

Hey peeps, I’m here with another Uppercase Box unboxing for you! If you don’t know what Uppercase is, as it says on the website, it’s “a young adult book-of-the-month subscription box. Simply put: You sign up and receive a recently published YA book and awesome book-related items every month! Plus you’ll access exclusive book content and a one-of-a-kind reading experience to dive deeper into each story.”

Uppercase is killing it with these picks for books! It was another case of, “I want to get this book,” and I got it, so I didn’t have to buy it. Very exciting!

    This month’s box included:

    • This Savage Song by Victoria Schwab (signed)
    • 480 vintage sticky notes set
    • This Savage Song exclusive button
    • Custom stamped book lover pencil set (Uppercase exclusive)

I’ve heard a lot of good things about this book because it’s a young adult book without ANY ROMANCE. I mean, is that unheard of? I feel like almost all YA books have some sort of romance in them (which I’m perfectly fine with), but I think this’ll be a breath of fresh air to see just an awesome friendship blossom.

And the sticky notes are so cute! And the pencils! And pins are so fun to collect. Awesome job, Uppercase! Thanks again!

Have you read this book yet? What are your thoughts? Do you play any instruments? I can play the guitar, even though I haven’t played in a long time.

  • Biannual Bibliothon & Make Me Read It Wrap Up

Well, I had a lot of fun doing both of these readathons even if I didn’t finish all of the books I set out to read. But that’s okay! I still managed to get some read and reviewed and I enjoyed the ones I did read.

    Biannual Bibliothon

For this readathon I only completed one book out of the five I was hoping to get to.

    Here’s what I read:

    • Girl Against the Universe: Completed!
    • The Unexpected Everything: 23 pages read
    • Red Rising: 6% read
    • The Archived: N/A
    • Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire: N/A

I didn’t have a chance to start all of the books I wanted to, but I still managed to read some books, which I enjoyed.

As for the video challenges, I completed three of the seven:

The character channel takeover challenge was definitely my favorite and it sparked some creative juices. I wish I could do more videos like these ones but I don’t know exactly what I would do!

    Make Me Read It

The two books that were voted for were Shadow & Bone and Lola and the Boy Next Door for this readathon.

    • Shadow and Bone: Completed!
    • Lola and the Boy Next Door: 59 pages read

I just ended up running out of time, unfortunately. And, like most of the country, I’ve been obsessively playing PokemonGO! so that hasn’t helped me at all.

    In Conclusion

I read two books completely and read a few more that were interesting to me, and one that was hard to get into but I hope gets better. I had a lot of fun with both of these readathons and I just might join them again next time! Maybe life will be nice and let me not be as busy next time.

How did your reading weeks go? Did you complete all of the goals you were trying to reach, or did you stumble a bit?

  • Shadow and Bone Book Review

    shadowandbonesTitle: Shadow and Bone
    Series: Grisha Trilogy #1
    Author: Leigh Bardugo
    Publisher: Square Fish
    Publication Date: June 5, 2012
    Genre: Young Adult – Fantasy
    Pages: 372
    Format: Purchased Paperback

Alina Starkov doesn’t expect much from life. Orphaned by the Border Wars, she is sure of only one thing: her best friend, Mal–and her inconvenient crush on him. Until the day their army regiment enters the Fold, a swath of unnatural darkness crawling with monsters. When their convoy is attacked and Mal is brutally injured, Alina reveals a dormant power not even she knew existed.

Ripped from everything she knows, Alina is taken to the royal court to be trained as a member of the Grisha, the magical elite led by the mysterious Darkling. With Alina’s extraordinary power in his arsenal, he believes they can finally destory the Fold. Now Alina must find a way to master her untamed gift and somehow fit into her new life without Mal by her side. But nothing in this lavish world is what it seems. As the threat to the kingdom mounts and her dangerous attraction to the Darkling grows, Alina will uncover a secret that could tear her heart–and her country–in two.

This story was fast-paced, stunning, and very addicting.

Of course I had heard about the hype surrounding the Grisha trilogy for a while now. There are many, many people who are rabid fans for it and I think I understand the hype now. It was so gripping and the writing was easy to read, full of fascinating world details, beautiful names, interesting magic, and characters that were… well, they were interesting.

Alina Starkov is an orphaned girl who grew up in an orphanage where she felt lonely a lot of the time and where she didn’t really know who she was. I thought that she was a good character and was trying to figure out her place in the world, but she didn’t stand out to me. She dealt with a lot of problems of being forced into a world that she never thought she had any business in and she adjusted to it pretty quickly (well, a few months time, but still), and there were, of course, some hiccups and revelations along the way. I’m more interested to see what will happen with her in the next book because I felt like she had a lot of potential in this one and it just wasn’t quite reached. Like, she was there, but not quite. Her power was interesting and developing and I wanted to see more of that development and how she felt about it. I was very impressed with her and being able to reclaim herself in the end over the Darkling’s powers because, oh man, let’s talk about him next.

The Darkling is a mysterious figure who’s ability is to create darkness. I was wary of him in the beginning because I thought he couldn’t be trusted, and then when he was trying to gain Alina’s trust as time went on, and the kiss? I was skeptical of him after that. I’m all for romance, but that felt rushed and out of place even for me. And then we learn a bit more about him from Baghra and I’m like, “I KNEW IT!” I’m not sure where he truly stands, if what he’s thinking and doing are truly to bring Ravka peace, but I do like the line, “Make me your villain.” Because it’s true. He’s probably the most interesting character in that regard because I want to know more about his side of the story from him.

Mal grew up with Alina as an orphan, and he grew into a very good looking young man with a cocky attitude. He ends up in the First Army as their best tracker, able to “find a rabbit out of a rock,” and he is probably my favorite. He wasn’t overly complex or anything, but he touched a place in my heart and I’m rooting for him in more ways than one. As a human, he doesn’t have any powers, but I like that he uses his smarts and instincts a lot more than the Grisha do and I’m interested to see where it’ll lead them in the next book.

There were other side characters, such as Genya, whom I really liked and I thought had many sides to her. She understood court politics and I think was really becoming a friend to Alina. And then there was Baghra and I wasn’t sure what to make of her and, frankly, I’m still unsure. The Apparat is a very mysterious character and I’m wondering what he’ll do or be in the next books.

The biggest downside I had with this book was the pacing. I felt the pacing was really off, for some reason, like it was all being very rushed. I felt like I didn’t get enough time with Alina, that I didn’t get to see enough of her explore her powers, explore herself, and explore the world. I wanted more, and I felt that the pacing resulted in there not being enough to really grasp in regards to that.

And, like I said, I felt that all of the characters didn’t reach their full potential that I was so hoping for in this novel. I felt like they were so close – just a sentence or two away from really doing something amazing – but I felt like I didn’t see it. Not to say that I didn’t love the characters, because I do, but I just wanted more.

The other thing was I felt like the first half of the story wasn’t as memorable as the second half. I mean, it was still good and it obviously built up to what the rest of the plot lead to in the story, but I just haven’t grasped it fully like I have the second half.

I think the strongest element this story had going for it was the world. The world building was absolutely phenomenal and I loved it. From the vast lands, the magic, the cities, the Fold, everything was well thought out and described. It was very richly detailed and very easy to picture. I also like the map and referencing back to it because there was a lot of traveling going on, so it was nice to see just where cities and locations were.

Overall, I really enjoyed this first book. Though I had a few minor problems with it, it was still highly enjoyable and addictive and I can’t wait to read the next book.

I rate this 4/5 stars and recommend it!

  • Top Ten Tuesday: 10 Facts About Me

    tttjuly12

Welcome to another Top Ten Tuesday as hosted by the lovely people over at The Broke & the Bookish. Today’s topic is all about me! Well, it’s facts that you want to share with people about you, whether that be bookish, blog related, or otherwise. I’ve done 25 bookish facts about me before, so today I’m going to do more random things about me!

1 . I have two tattoos. I’ve shown pictures of each of them on the blog before, but here they are again. And yes, I do want to get more.

    2. I’ve never broken a bone! I’ve sprained my right ankle twice, but otherwise nothing major has happened.

    3. I used to take horseback riding lessons. Those few years I did were some of my favorite, but alas, it was too expensive to keep up with it. I haven’t ridden in about eight or so years and would love to pick it up again.

    4. I suck at math. I always have and probably always will. My brain has a hard time wrapping around a lot of mathematical problems, but I did really well in algebra and statistics in high school.

    5. I played baseball in fourth or fifth grade and I was hit in the nose by a baseball. It bled, I cried, I sat out for an inning; it was fun (not). And our team was lousy and only won two games the entire season and I was one of two girls on said team… I did get to take home one of the winning baseballs home, though, so that was neat.

    6. My husband and I have been together since 2008. We’ve had our ups and downs and we’ve taken a few brakes in the early years, but we’ve been together since. I don’t have a photo from the first year we were together (I don’t know why, but there’s none on this computer), so here’s one from prom 2009 and then our honeymoon to Disney in 2014:

    7. I love being creative! So blogging is right up my alley because I love to draw, write, create! That’s really where many of my true passions lie and I feel I should utilize them more often than I do.

    8. My best friend has been my best friend since kindergarten. Yup! We’ve been best friends for TWENTY YEARS. Holy carp, that’s weird to say. But my best friend is amazing and I love her to bits. We’re often confused for sisters, and we’re both okay with that.

    9. I self taught myself American Sign Language a few years ago. I’m wicked rusty now because I don’t use it in my every day life, but I taught myself the basic alphabet and a few words, like “bacon,” “tree,” and some other miscellaneous things. It’s a fun language to learn, that’s for sure, I just didn’t really find an opportunity to continue learning it!

    10. I’m still working on the whole self-love thing. It’s very hard, but I’ve been trying a lot harder lately to love myself more because, well, I deserve it and I should.

And there you have it; ten facts about me. What a wide range of things to share.
