  • March Uppercase Box Unboxing

Hey peeps, I’m here with another Uppercase Box unboxing for you! If you don’t know what Uppercase is, as it says on the website, it’s “a young adult book-of-the-month subscription box. Simply put: You sign up and receive a recently published YA book and awesome book-related items every month! Plus you’ll access exclusive book content and a one-of-a-kind reading experience to dive deeper into each story.”

So this month was a cool box because I had thought about getting this book in store, but I’m glad I didn’t because it showed up in the package!

    Here’s what it looked like:

As you can see, the box included:

And of course it came with the reading experience bookmark where you can participate in some fun things through Uppercase for the book that month.

I already have the magnet up on my fridge and I’m currently wearing the earrings. One of my coworkers actually complimented me today and said that she really liked them. She then proceeded to ask: “What’s the quote? Your face?” And I just nodded and framed my face with my hands and she laughed.

All in all, I really like this month’s box! I definitely love the earrings the most, but I am also excited to read the book!

What do you think of this month’s box? Have you/will you read the book? Are you signed up for any book subscription boxes? Let me know!

  • Beautiful Covers: Pink

Hey peeps, welcome to another Beautiful Covers! I’m working my way through the rainbow, so check out the rest of the colors when they come out over the next several weeks!

    Today’s color is: pink!

Pink is my favorite color, and because of that I am simply just drawn to covers with pink on them. But they have to be the right shade of pink, not that gaudy, awful purple-pink that people think is pink but is really just a bright violet-fuscia color. Yeah. You know what I’m talking about.

I actually don’t own a lot of books with pink on the cover as the primary color, which makes me sad! But I do have enough to make this list, so here are five of my favorite pink covers:

1 . Fushigi Yuugi: vol 1 Priestess by Yuu Watase

    fushigiyuugi1

As this is my favorite manga series of all time, I couldn’t not include this in my list. There are so many beautiful covers, and even a few that have a lot of pink in them, but I love this first volume cover. It shows the main character, Tamahome and Miaka, and it kind of shows a glimpse into what goes on in the story. It’s beautiful and I absolutely love the art style.

    2. Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell (collector’s edition from Target)

    fangirlpink

Fangirl was one of my favorite reads of 2014, and so I was so excited when the collector’s editions came out and one of them was pink! I had to have the pink one. Had to. So I got it and I love it and it’s beautiful simplicity. I love Levi and Cath on the cover and how the typography is simple, but clean. It’s just a beautiful cover, in my opinion, because of the simpleness.

    3. Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins

    annaandthefrenchkiss

I can finally say that I’ve read this book! And by the way, the covers for this trilogy companion series are beautiful! Look at that cover! The Eiffel Tower! The typography! The pink sunset kind of thing going on! This is simply beautiful, plus it has a nice texture. Love it.

    4. Chobits vol. 6 by CLAMP

    chobits6

Was I not serious when I said last week with the yellow covers that these covers of Chobits are gorgeous? LOOK AT HER DRESS. THE CURTAIN. THE EVERYTHING. I love this cover, as I do all the covers for this series, but as pink is my favorite color I’m going to have to say that this one is probably my favorite.

    5. This Shattered World by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner

    thisshatteredworld

Okay, this entire trilogy is beyond gorgeous, and though most of this one is orange I’m still counting it as pink because there are various shades of it, not just in that one corner. LOOK AT THEM FLOATING MAJESTICLY. Look at the stars and the way the nebula makes them stand out. The typography is sleek and crisp. The models do a wonderful job portraying the characters they’re supposed to look like in the story. Just… yes. I’m melting.

So there you have it for this week’s Beautiful Covers! I’m loving this series because it not only lets me share such amazing covers, but it also lets me stare at them for as long as I want while I’m writing the post, hahaha!

What are some of your favorite pink covers? What do you think of my selection? Let me know!

  • How I Got Into Reading

I’ve been seeing this topic floating around Booktube [here, here, here] and I thought that I’d share with you all how I got into reading. It’s always fun to reflect back and think about the beginning, so come and take a stroll down memory lane with me!

I’ve always been a reader and my parents can definitely attest to that. I was always picking up books, and even if I didn’t read it like I would nowadays, I’d still skim over it, look at the pictures, or read certain paragraphs or whatever. I mean, it was kind of sporadic, but when I did find something that I liked, I’d get really into it.

I remember reading those books that were written like diary entries and they’d follow different girls throughout time – from landing in Plymouth to slave girls to girls from Ireland and more – and I loved those books! I found them fascinating and lovely and just fun to read. I know it was a kind of series, but I can’t even remember what they were called, but I do remember them having ribbon bookmarks, which was the coolest thing even back then.

I was also into these sciencey books where the narrator was a mouse and would teach you about what a rainbow is and how clouds make rain and stuff. I loved that set! I actually might still have it at my parents’ house… I also read a lot of fairy tales, like about Rapunzel and Rumpelstiltskin, among others, and was so fascinated not only by the stories, but by the illustrations.

As a young reader, I wanted to relate to what I was reading, or learn something more, but I think as I grew older that I became more fascinated with the story type of books, such as The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe that we had to read in 5th grade. I don’t remember how I felt upon initially reading it, but I do remember enjoying the film adaptation. And I have the vague sense that I enjoyed the kind of movie that played in my mind as I read.

I was introduced to manga in the 6th grade, and I’m so glad I was because that really helped me to become an avid reader. Even if I was just reading manga all the time, I was still enjoying what I was reading because of the story, content, and art. And it was because of manga that I really became such an avid reader in my tween and teen years.

I read all sorts of manga and got into anime, which I think just helped me develop more of my identity as a young person. I loved series like Fushigi Yuugi (still my favorite), Tokyo Mew Mew, Chobits, DNAngel, Pita Ten, Hot Gimmick, Fruits Basket, and more. There were so many different kinds of stories and genres and art styles that I was never without something new and fun to read.

And then school reading became more series and things started to fluctuate a little with my reading.

As I had to read certain books in school, I only remember liking a few because, well, reading for school is oftentimes boring and doesn’t really do anything for me. I remember reading Holes, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Romeo & Juliet, Macbeth – Some of these works I liked, while others like April Morning, The Great Gatsby, A Catcher in the Rye... yeah, I didn’t like them so much. Some gripped me while others just bored me.

But it was in high school that I really started to branch out into reading different kinds of books, and from there my reading took off – at least momentarily. I read books that I loved in my free time, like Memoirs of a Geisha, House of the Scorpion, and, you guessed it, Twilight. Yes, I was a fan before the craziness that was the fandom began. I loved the story of Bella and Edward, and I will continue to be a fan even today.

Once I was out of high school, though, my reading took a turn into a lull, a kind of limbo, really. I mean, I was reading on occasion in my spare time, but not as much as I used to, and certainly not as much as I do now. I blame college and work stress.

What really got me into reading was Booktube, actually. I didn’t start to really read with so much passion and vigor until I started my own channel and subsequently this blog. That’s when I read and read and read and discovered that I love this and it’s what I want to do for the rest of my life; if not professionally, then definitely in my spare time. I wasn’t until this past year that I challenged myself to read 50 books in one year – which I accomplished.

Reading has always been a passion and a hobby for me, but I think that as I grow older I really appreciate it more and more and I’m so glad that I’ve always had reading in my life. From my earliest memories of borrowing books from teachers and not returning them (oops), to reading for fun after school, to now where I’m a book blogger and booktuber? Yeah, I’d say that that’s a pretty sweet life.

So, there you have it! That’s my how I got into reading story. I guess it wasn’t so much a story as a, “I’ve always been a reader!” kind of situation.

What about you? When did you first discover your love and passion for reading? What book or series got you into reading? Were you a young reader like me? Let me know!

  • Top Ten Tuesday: Books On My Spring TBR

Hey peeps and welcome to another Top Ten Tuesday as hosted by the lovely people of The Broke & the Bookish. Today’s topic is all about the ten books on our spring TBR, and these are just a few I really want to try to get to this spring. And yes, there’s more than ten because let’s be real: unrealistic goals are key.

1 . The Serpent King by Jeff Zentner. I just started reading this, and as a debut novel, I’m excited to see how it turns out. I’ve been hearing a lot of positive things about this book so I’m hoping to like it as well.

2 & 3. Earth’s End and Water’s Wrath by Elise Kova. I’m currently reading Earth’s End, so I know I’ll get to Water’s Wrath when it’s released later in April. I’m really enjoying this fantasy romance series, and I hope that that streak continues.

    4. Passenger by Alexandra Bracken. Yeah, I still need to finish this one… I just don’t want to leave it forgotten or anything!

    5. Clockwork Prince by Cassandra Clare. I need to finish this trilogy. And TMI. It just needs to happen and it’s not going to happen until I finish reading this one, at least.

    6. Magic Slays by Ilona Andrews. As the fifth book in the Kate Daniel series I really want to read this because I’ve grown so attached to these characters and I need to know what happens next in the plot. Plus, then I can read…

    7. Gunmetal Magic by Ilona Andrews. This is book #5.5 in the Kate Daniels series and it follows one of the side characters, and Kate’s best friend, Andrea. And I’m SO EXCITED about this one because I love her as a character, so to get the opportunity to read a book about her? Yes, please.

    8. Moon Called by Patricia Briggs. This is the first book in the Mercy Thompson series, and like the Kate Daniels series it’s an urban fantasy, but it’s main focus is werewolves. There’s other creatures and magic, too, but I’m just wicked intrigued with werewolves, so there you go. Plus, female mechanic. Yes.

    9. Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo. I know, I know, I’m late to the party, but I do want to get to this this spring! I think I might marathon the trilogy depending on how much I like the first book, but yeah. I want to know what’s all the hubbub about the Grisha world!

    10. Scarlet by Marissa Meyer. I’ve been putting off reading this book because I wasn’t the biggest fan of Cinder, but I still enjoyed it. I hear the series gets better as it goes, I just… yeah.

    11. Gathering Darkness by Morgan Rhodes. I’ve been putting this one off, too, because I’m having a really hard time connecting with these books, even though I do enjoy them.

    12. Blue Lily, Lily Blue by Maggie Stiefvater. I need to keep going because I love this series so much. I’m trying to pace myself with these books so when the last book comes out I can just get it and read it right away.

    13. Glass Sword by Victoria Aveyard. I really want to give this a go and see how I like it because that first one just didn’t do it for me, but I’m still curious to find out what happens next.

Honestly, the list can go on and on because there are SO many books that I want to read this year, and even just this spring, but I know that 1) I won’t get to them right now, and 2) I need to pace myself.

What are some of the books you want to get to this spring? Are any of my books on your TBR? Let me know!

  • Beautiful Covers: Yellow

Hey peeps, welcome to another Beautiful Covers! I’m working my way through the rainbow, so check out the rest of the colors when they come out over the next several weeks!

    Today’s color is: yellow!

Yellow is a very bright color, one that reminds me of sunshine (and blinding light) and happy thoughts. I don’t know about you, but I really like the color yellow.

Now, I just realized that I haven’t read a lot of books that had a lot of yellow on them, but that’s not going to stop me from picking ones that have snippets of yellow, at least!

So here are five of my favorite yellow covers:

1 . Uprooted by Naomi Novik

    uprooted

I love the art style on this cover and how it looks olden timey and very antique. The yellow and gold tones really bring out the darker colors of the characters and I think that it really shows whimsy for this story.

    2. Carry On by Rainbow Rowell

    carryon

I love the simple outline and stark contrast between the blue and yellow on this book. I think that even though it’s simple it’s still an awesome concept and that it really encompasses what the book is about: two boys, very different from one another, but somehow connected.

    3. Dreams of Gods & Monsters by Laini Taylor

    dreamsofgodsandmonsters

This is my favorite cover of the trilogy because it is just sheer beauty and wonder. The typography is gorgeous and bold, and then the splashes of color? Perfect. It really shows the fierceness of Karou, the main character, and the horns are symbolic to what’s going on in the book. Love it.

    4. An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir

    anemberintheashes

Okay, this cover is just amazing. If you look in the bottom corner, there’s a person standing there looking up at the person standing in the H in Ashes. And then the buildings up top? It’s how it’s described in the book and I love that. Plus the pops of gold and yellow and brown really make it seem rustic and old and timeless.

    5. Chobits vol. 4 by CLAMP

    chobits4

Anything made by CLAMP is beautiful, in my opinion, but I love this cover! It’s bright and showcases one of my favorite characters: Chi. Well, every cover has her on it, but still. The yellow flowers are really vivid and draw your eye, and then Chi stands out in her white, but also tailors to the yellow with the dark ribbons on her. Lovely.

So there you have it! This week’s color and some of my favorite covers associated with that color. Yellow was actually extremely hard and I really had to dig into books I’ve read or will read for books that had a lot of yellow on them.

What are some of your favorite yellow covered books? Do you agree with my choices? Let me know some of your favorites!
