Top 5 Wednesday: Things On Your Shelf That Aren’t Books

Welcome to another Top 5 Wednesday as hosted by Lainey of gingerreadslainey on YouTube. Today’s topic is all about those things on your shelves that aren’t books. So let’s jump right in:

5. Disney Girl License Plate

IMG_2049

I got this license plate during an event at my college about two years ago. I love love love Disney with all my heart, and so I had to get a plate (that’s plastic) to commemorate it.

4. Mickey & Minnie Plushies

IMG_2047

We got these plushies on our honeymoon to Disney World over Christmas in 2014. It was so fun and I wanted to get my first Mickey plushie. Well, why not both Mickey and Minnie for the price of one? Plus they were dressed in their wedding garb, which was perfect.

3. Seashell from Wedding

IMG_2048

It was a Disney themed wedding (see a pattern here?) and I didn’t want a typical bouquet once I was given the option to carry a seashell. And guess who my favorite Disney Princess is? Ariel! So it was perfect. And yes, those flowers are from the wedding; they’re dried by now, so they can crumble really easily.

2. Mickey & Minnie Frame with Wedding Picture

IMG_2046

On our honeymoon in Disney we saw this frame at our resort and we just HAD to have it. Luckily they found a box in the back otherwise we may not have been able to get it. I love how beautiful it is and how it has the two iconic characters dressed up for their wedding day (plus the picture in it is from our wedding day!).

1. Family Photos

IMG_2050

I have a whole bunch of photos of my sister, who didn’t make it when she was born, to my Memere and Pepere from their prom back in the day, to my dogs Hershey and Taz. They’re super special to me and definitely make it to the top spot on the list for this week.

What are some of your miscellaneous things that are on your shelves that you find special? Let me know!

Rayna Recommends: Romance

Hey everyone! So, I planned on doing this last month, but never got to it, so I’m going to start doing it this month! What is “this” that I’m talking about? It’s called Rayna Recommends.

On the first Saturday of every month I plan on doing a recommendation post where I will list five to ten books, movies, and/or TV shows that feature a certain genre or theme that I think other people might enjoy and should check out. Sounds cool, right?

Okay, so this month’s topic is…. romance! I love love. Like seriously, if it’s not in a novel or movie or show somewhere, I feel a pang of sadness within me. (I mean, I’m totally fine about it if there’s no obvious tension between characters that can lead to it at some point…)

So, without further ado, here are some of my top picks where romance is a big element:

Books

  • Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda” by Becky Albertalli. Guys. I mean, I’ve already read and reviewed this book, and it’s become one of my favorites really fast. Not only is there romance in it in multiple ways, but it’s a diverse read (gay teens), it made me laugh out loud (literally) so many times, and it’s just a fun read that I think everyone can enjoy.
  • The Kiss of Deception” by Mary E. Pearson. I loved this book (which I listened to via Audible & I reviewed it). It had romance in it – a good love triangle, if you ask me. There were times when I rooted for the main character, Lia, to be with one guy, but then later I really wanted her to be with the other. Frankly, I don’t know where I stand anymore, haha! But it also included betrayal, plot twists, great narrative, and a good plot.
  • The Selection” by Kiera Cass. I mean, a dystopian book around the themes of The Bachelor? Yes, it sounds cheesy, but it became a favorite series of mine. I did a review of the whole trilogy, and I really enjoyed it. The romance aspect was obviously the most prominent part to the story, but it also included themes of friendship, never losing yourself to pressure, a kingdom and war, and more.
  • Daughter of Smoke and Bone” by Laini Taylor. This book was awesome, as I did a review of it, and though it features a lot about chimera and it had a lot of fantasy elements to it, it also featured a romance that stretched beyond time. I loved this book. I thought the romance was going to feel rushed and out there, but it was actually kind of beautiful the way it was written and I just loved it so much. I can’t express into words how much, actually.

Movies

  • The Notebook. Based off of the book by Nicholas Sparks, this movie will always be one of my favorites. It’s romance heavy, yes, but it’s a story that is beautiful and well loved (my mom has watched it over 100 times, I swear). It’s a story about a summer romance and young love, and how that love comes back to flourish years later and how it can transcend even a disease such as Alzheimer’s. If you haven’t seen this, see it. Now. Go. Cry like a baby (because I do, too).
  • The Lake House. I never manage to see this from the beginning, but close to it. It’s about a man and a woman who live in the same lake house built by the guy’s father a long time ago, BUT the man and woman live in different time periods. They go back and forth to communicate with one another in letters and eventually they fall for one another because of that. Even though they’re apart by years, it’s a sweet tale and I really, really loved it.

TV Shows

  • Ore Monogatari. It’s an anime & manga, but it’s about this guy who’s ginormous in stature and he falls for these girls who are kind of really mean to him. But one day, while he’s on the train, his friend spots a sketchy guy and the girl the guy is next to. So, Gouda (the big dude), goes up and yells at the guy and the girl instantly falls for Gouda and Gouda for her. AHH. So much squee and laughs and adorableness and GO WATCH IT. I can’t even right now.
  • Reign. Talk about drama! Set during the time with Mary Queen of Scots and the French court, it follows Mary and how she is to marry the heir to the French throne, Francis. But Francis doesn’t want to marry Mary and there’s a bunch of drama and twists and turns and sex. Oh my. It is a teen drama, but I really enjoyed it more than I thought I would (and since I only have Netflix, I need the second season, like, now).

Okay, I think that’s a decent list. GO CHECK THEM OUT! (I mean, if you want. You don’t have to.)

But yes! These are the recommendations I have for romance! So I’ll do my best to do this every month and give new recommendations every month. I may go back to certain themes and topics as the time goes by, but I’ll be sure to include new content and everything.

Do any of these recommendations sound interesting to you? Would you read/watch any of these? What do you recommend to me for romance books/movies/shows? Let me know!

The Book Courtship Tag

This was a fun tag floating around Booktube, so I decided to chime in with my own answers. It was originally created by Leah at HilLovesBooks.

Phase 1 – Initial Attraction: A book that you bought because of the cover?

We all have those books, don’t we? One of the books I bought because of the cover was “These Broken Stars” by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner. I mean, just look at it:

Phase 2 – First Impressions: A book that you got because of the summary?

This one was one in which I have only read a portion, but ever since I read the summary I needed to read it. And that’s “Between the Lines” by Jodi Piccoult and Samantha Van Leer (her daughter).

betweenthelines

The summary:

What happens when happily ever after…isn’t?

Delilah is a bit of a loner who prefers spending her time in the school library with her head in a book—one book in particular. Between the Lines may be a fairy tale, but it feels real. Prince Oliver is brave, adventurous, and loving. He really speaks to Delilah.

And then one day Oliver actually speaks to her. Turns out, Oliver is more than a one-dimensional storybook prince. He’s a restless teen who feels trapped by his literary existence and hates that his entire life is predetermined. He’s sure there’s more for him out there in the real world, and Delilah might just be his key to freedom.

Delilah and Oliver work together to attempt to get Oliver out of his book, a challenging task that forces them to examine their perceptions of fate, the world, and their places in it. And as their attraction to each other grows along the way, a romance blossoms that is anything but a fairy tale.

I was instantly intrigued because I’ve never read or heard of a book like that before.

Phase 3 – Sweet Talk: A book with great writing?

This is definitely a most recent favorite of mine, and that is “The Kiss of Deception” by Mary E. Pearson. Though I listened to the audiobook, the details put into the world and the depths of characters and where they were going in the plot was one that I loved. Pearson’s writing style is lovely and it drives the story forward.

Phase 4 – First Date: A first book of a series which made you want to pick up the rest of the series?

This one was surprising to me, but that is “The Selection” by Kiera Cass. I didn’t think I was going to like this book at all, but as soon as I read it I needed to read the other books ASAP. The way Cass writes the love story and the chemistry between America and Maxon is just swoon-worthy.

Phase 5 – Late Night Phone Calls: A book that kept you up all night?

This didn’t necessarily keep me up all night, but I had to finish it as fast as possible because I loved it that much: “The Fault in Our Stars” by John Green. It was just such a great captivating book that as soon as I started I had to finish it, but work got in the way of that. As soon as I got home that day, I ran right upstairs to jump back into it, finishing it in the fastest reading time ever for a novel that I’ve read.

Phase 6 – Always on my mind: A book you could not stop thinking about?

At the time I couldn’t stop thinking about this book and the series and how much I wanted to continue on at that precise moment with the rest, and that is “City of Glass” by Cassandra Clare. It’s the third book in the Mortal Instruments series, but it was such a great wrap-up to a great story that I just couldn’t stop thinking about how so many of the loose ties came together in the end.

Phase 7 – Getting Physical: A book which you love the way it feels?

The Ocean at the End of the Lane” by Neil Gaiman has such a cool, scratchy texture. It’s kind of like sandpaper without the threat of potentially shaving your skin off. Such a cool feeling.

theoceanattheendofthelane
Phase 8 – Meeting the parents: A book which you would recommend to your family and friends?

I’d definitely recommend “Fangirl” by Rainbow Rowell to friends and family. The book is funny, serious, and very reminiscent of family life and college, and since the majority of my friends are around that age, I think they could relate. I loved this story so much and I’d definitely recommend it to my family and friends.

Phase 9 – Thinking about the future: A book or series you know you will re read many times in the future?

This shouldn’t come as a shocker: The Throne of Glass series by Sarah J Maas is definitely one I can see myself rereading for years to come. The story, the world, the writing, the characters, they’re all so wonderfully built and developing and growing as the books progress and that’s what I love about them. It’s not a stagnant series.

Phase 10 – Share the love: Who do you tag?

All of you lovely people should also do this tag! It’s fun and it really gets you thinking on some of your favorite books.

Happy Valentine’s Day

Well, the title states it, but I’ll say it again: Happy Valentine’s Day! This is the day when love is most abundant in the air, Hallmark sells a crap ton of cards, flowers are given to many, and chocolate is much celebrated.

Ah, love. It’s a wonderful thing, really. When I think of love I think of my favorite types of books or movies that incorporate love into their stories. I’m a romantic at heart, so feeding into that love is something that I look forward to expectantly in what I read or watch.

So, for today’s topic I wanted to give you guys a list of some of my favorite couples from books and movies/TV shows that I think are worth checking out. If you love love, then I suggest these various things:

Books

  • Meghan and Ash from The Iron Fey series by Julie Kagawa. They have such a strong relationship that builds as the series progresses and I love the dynamic between them. Plus it has faeries, which are some of my favorite beings to read about, so that’s a plus. But these two battle together and overcome many trials together, though not without difficulty, of course.
  • Maxon and America from “The Selection” series by Kiera Cass. Though I’ve only read the first book I know the ending because it was spoiled for me, but I still love the dynamic between these two. They bring out the best of each other, which does include vulnerabilities, and I really like that about their relationship.
  • Jubilee and Flynn from “This Shattered World” by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner. Love, love, love these two so much. A captain and a rebel end up falling in love with one another, though neither of them really admits their feelings to the other. As the story progresses they really become close and know that they are willing to risk their lives for one another. I really loved their story and how they worked together, and how their affection for one another grew over time rather than developed right away.
  • Hazel and Gus from “The Fault in Our Stars” by John Green. This book was full of heartbreaking and heartwrenching moments, but I loved the relationship these two had. They weren’t just cancer kids, but they had a relationship that grew over time and you could really see their feelings for each other grow in that time.
  • Eleanor and Park from “Eleanor & Park” by Rainbow Rowell. Such a cute book. Such a good story. These two grew into a relationship together and that’s what I love about books like this: it’s not just insta-love, it’s a growing, flourishing relationship with one another. These two dealt with a lot of stereotypes and obstacles, but they overcame them one by one.
  • Cath and Levi from “Fangirl” by Rainbow Rowell. Again, so cute, love this book so much. These two were so different from one another but I think that that was what helped to bring them close together. They’re definitely one of my top OTPs.
  • Elena and Stephen from “The Vampire Diaries” series by L.J. Smith. I haven’t read these books since high school but I remember how much I enjoyed reading about their relationship and how they complimented one another throughout the series rather than completing each other. It was really great to read about and how much their love for one another extended.
  • Miaka and Tamahome from “Fushigi Yuugi” by Yuu Watase. These two went through SO MUCH over the 18 volume span of this manga series. I love them so, so, sooooo much. As my favorite series I couldn’t help but grow with them and love them and watch as they grew together in many ways and how their love for each other grew throughout the series. Truly awesome.

Okay, I could go on and on, but I think that’s a good chunk of a list for now. Now some books I haven’t read yet but have seen the film version of that book, or otherwise, so I’m going to list some of my favorite movie couples that I love:

Movies/TV Shows

  • Noah and Allie from The Notebook. If you love love then you’ll love this movie. Seriously, it tugs on all of the feels you could ever have. My mom watches this movie religiously when it’s on (I’m not kidding) and I love it as well. The relationship these two form, though very rocky, is strong and full of passion. It’s based off of the book by Nicholas Sparks.
  • Landon and Jamie from A Walk to Remember. Again, this tugs on the feels so much. Bad boy meets good girl and bad boy falls in love with good girl. So cute, so cheesy, but so good. Really, these two are a great couple together and it’s just… oh, just watch it. This is also based off of a Nicholas Sparks book.
  • Simba and Nala from The Lion King. Okay, why wouldn’t I throw these two in here? They’re childhood (cubhood?) best buds who grow up together, but get separated, find each other, fall in love, have a falling out, but still love each other and save their kingdom together. I mean really, if they aren’t on your OTP list, put them there.
  • Ron and Hermione from the Harry Potter series. Yes, we love them. Yes, they’re awesome. And of course they make my list (I’m still only on book four, so I have to base this opinion off of the movies). Obviously based off of the books by J.K. Rowling.
  • Emma Swann and Hook from Once Upon a Time. I love this series so much, but I’ve seen how these two act toward each other and omg it’s awesome. It feels like authentic love and I love that about them. Also Mary Margaret and David from this series, too, makes me happy. Love them together.
  • Jamie and Claire from Outlander. Though I’ve only seen the first episode (this lack of cable thing is killing me) I loved them together and I obviously know what happens between them because spoilers on the Internet are extremely hard to avoid. But anyway, these two are just so… perfect together. This is also based off of the book series by Diana Gabaldon, and I do have the first book, I just have to, you know, read it.
  • Bones (Temperance) and Booth from Bones. They’re always picking on each other and always getting under one another’s skin, but they also work well together as a team and I know that they have feelings for one another as the series progresses. I’ve watched this on and off for a few years, but now I’m trying to catch up on Netflix.
  • Richard Castle and Kate Beckett from Castle. They’re so goofy together and know just the right buttons to push to get under each other’s skin, but they also know how the other works and can trust the other to lead them through any given situation.

Okay, a list of eight each, I think that’s good. So those are some of my favorite OTPs and movies/books/TV shows that incorporate love in some way, shape, or form within them. If you love love, then I definitely suggest checking them out.

What are some of your OTPs? Either from books, movies, and/or TV shows – let me know!
