  • Rayna Recommends: Diversity

Hey guys, welcome to another installment of my sporadic series, Rayna Recommends! This is a time where I recommend books, movies, and TV shows to you based on the genre or type of books I wanted to talk about.

Today I’m going to recommend to you some of the diverse books, movies, and shows I’ve seen and read. I really enjoy reading and watching this kinds of things, but I still feel like I don’t get enough! With all of the diversity talk that’s been going around lately, I thought that this would be appropriate, so here are my recommendations:

    Books

    • None of the Above by I.W. Gregorio is a YA book about a girl who is intersex. Now, I’ve never heard of the term “intersex” until I read this book, and it really opened my eyes to it. It follows a girl who also didn’t know she was intersex until an unfortunate sexual time with her boyfriend that was extremely painful to her and her journey in the beginning stages of accepting who she is and how she can still have a normal life despite it all. It was very interesting and I definitely recommend it.
    • Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli. Need I say anything more? It’s hilarious, heartwarming, charming, and everything I could’ve asked for in a LGBT+ read and more. Seriously, check this one out. You won’t regret it. It’s about a high schooler named Simon who isn’t out of the closest yet, and how he’s being blackmailed by another kid so his secret is in danger. It’s really awesome, so go read it – right now!
    • My Heart and Other Black Holes by Jasmine Warga has a suicide trigger warning on it, I just want you to know. It’s about a girl who is dealing with a lot of suicidal thoughts and depression, and she meets a kid who also wants to commit suicide with someone else. It follows them and how she realizes how much more life has to offer than what’s going on there. It’s really something very close and personal to my heart and I highly recommend this book.

    Movies

    • Beyond the Lights is a movie about a young woman in the music industry who is saved by an officer from committing suicide. The two fall in love and in the process, she realizes that hiding behind all of the makeup, glamor, and fame is so much more to be had. I really enjoyed this movie and thought that it was really well done. Cheesy in a few parts, but overall enjoyable. I love seeing movies with singers/dancers/artists that strive to be their best even when there’s bumps along the way, and to see a cast of colored actors is always awesome as well.
    • Blue is the Warmest Color is an international movie set in France and it follows a girl, Adele, who is discovering who she is as a teen when she meets Emma, a girl with blue hair. The two end up falling in love, but of course there are repercussions in Adele’s life because she was “supposed” to be a straight girl. It’s a really long movie (three hours), and there’s a lot of graphic sexual scenes that I had to turn the volume down on, BUT I really did enjoy it and I really want to see the second part since this is only the first half. It ended on a cliffhanger (kind of) and I need to see how it ends!

    TV Shows

    • Orange is the New Black definitely has a diverse cast of characters, and it’s about women in prison. Honestly, that’s a crap ton of diversity if you ask me. Now, I don’t watch OITNB, like, at all, BUT, my husband does and he’s really into it. I’ve watched bits and pieces and from what I gather it’s a really interesting show and one that a lot of people are really into.
    • Good Morning Call is a Japanese drama that’s based off of the manga and it’s adorable and funny and GO WATCH IT. It’s available on Netflix, so really, no excuse. It follows a girl, Nao, and how she rents her dream apartment, but comes to find out she’s stuck with rooming with one of her high school’s hottest guys: Uehara. It’s dramatic, funny, adorable (like I said), so go check it out.

I’m literally drawing blanks now on other movies and shows, but these are just some of the diverse things that I’ve personally enjoyed and that I think you should definitely check out.

    Let’s Chat! ≧◡≦

Do you have any recommendations for me for diverse reads, movies, or shows? I’d really love to hear it! Also, have you read/watched any of the items on my list? Let me know your thoughts!

  • I Am The Reader Tag

thereaderHey peeps and welcome to another tag! So the one I’m doing today I first saw on emmmabooks channel called I Am the Reader and it was created by PenguinTeen. This tag is to celebrate the book called The Reader by Traci Chee.

The synopsis says: Sefia knows what it means to survive. After her father is brutally murdered, she flees into the wilderness with her aunt Nin, who teaches her to hunt, track, and steal. But when Nin is kidnapped, leaving Sefia completely alone, none of her survival skills can help her discover where Nin’s been taken, or if she’s even alive. The only clue to both her aunt’s disappearance and her father’s murder is the odd rectangular object her father left behind, an object she comes to realize is a book—a marvelous item unheard of in her otherwise illiterate society. With the help of this book, and the aid of a mysterious stranger with dark secrets of his own, Sefia sets out to rescue her aunt and find out what really happened the day her father was killed—and punish the people responsible.

And if that sounds interesting to you, then you can get your hands on this book now because it was released on September 13th! So let’s jump into the tag:

1 . Choose one word that describes being a reader.

Fun. Seriously, think about it. As a reader you get to discover new worlds, meet new characters, talk with other book lovers (like you peeps!). I mean, what could be more fun?

    2. What’s the very first book you fell in love with?

I remember several books that I fell in love with, but the one that sticks out in my mind the most, and the one book I’ve reread four times, is Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. This book shaped so many young people’s lives when it came out and I was definitely one of those people. I fell in love with the characters, the story, the plot, everything about it. I was a Twihard through and through before it was even considered for a movie. And I could talk about it with my friends, and then I had my husband read them (when we had just started dating in high school), and even he liked them! It’s just one of those books that will always remain in my heart for so many reasons.

    3. Hardcover or paperback?

I personally prefer hardcover just because I think they’re much prettier and easier to hold when reading and such, but I really don’t mind paperback because they’re cheaper and they can still be pretty.

    4. How has reading shaped your identity?

Oh man. I can definitely say these past two years have really shaped my identity because before, yeah, I loved to read for fun and stuff, but until I started blogging and really getting into it, I would read – maybe – one book for fun per year. If I was lucky, anyway. But I’ve always loved to read. From the time I was young, I was picking up books. I remember as a kid I would read fairytales and kids science books and books about certain topics, like puberty or animals or whatever. But as I grew older, my reading slowed down (I hated summer reading because all of the books were boring to me until my last required year in high school), but I’d always find those few hidden gems that I’d love and reread over and over again.

These past two years, though, have been tremendous for me in terms of calling myself a reader. My coworkers know that I run this blog and occasionally talk to me about it. I got a tattoo on my back that’s a quote about how much I love books, for crying out loud:

    IMG_2483

So how has reading shaped my identity? Everyone knows me as a reader. Everyone knows just how much I love books and they’re generally surprised when I tell them I haven’t read certain series yet (*cough*HarryPotter*cough*) and they just know exactly what to give me during certain times of the year. I used to just be Rayna, but since starting my blog I’ve become Reader Rayna, and I’m perfectly happy with that.

    5. What book do you read when you need to be comforted?

I honestly don’t turn to reading when I need to be comforted. For me, yeah, reading is relaxing, but I really enjoy getting into the stories and really focusing on what I’m reading. If I’m not in the right mood, then I can’t read.

But, if I were to lean toward a book, then I’d probably choose one I know can make me either smile, laugh, or one I’ve read multiple times, like Twilight. Or maybe just read manga so my mind can also focus on the images.

    6. Who taught you to be a reader? (Or did you do it all on your own?)

I honestly learned all on my own, really. I mean, my parents always encouraged it and would always get me books if I asked and everything, but in terms of my passion for reading? That’s all my own. My parents don’t read for fun at all, so really it’s all me.

    7. Describe your dream reading lounge.

I could say Belle’s library (which is amazing), but honestly I would just like a wall of bookshelves full of books, and a small nook where I could have a large, stuffed chair with a throw blanket, and a small table on the side to rest my book or a cup of juice. Kind of like this but with a space for a small table:

    8. What book changed the way you act or see the world?

Hmm, this one’s tough because I don’t know if there actually has been a book that’s made me change the way I act or see the world. Like I said, Twilight had a huge significance in my life in high school when I first read it, but I don’t know if something’s really changed the way I view things… But I mean, doesn’t every book effect us in some way?

So there you have it! I thought this tag asked a lot more personal, detailed questions than a lot of tags do, so I really wanted to do this one.

    For people I’m tagging, I tag…

  • Top Ten Tuesday: All Time Favorite Fantasy Books

    tttalltimefavefantasy

Welcome to another Top Ten Tuesday as hosted by the lovely people over at The Broke & the Bookish. Today’s topic is all about our ALL TIME favorite books in whatever genre we wanted to pick, so I chose fantasy. It’s my favorite genre to read from and so it should be easy to pick books, right? Well, I hope.

1 . City of Glass by Cassandra Clare – This was such a perfect wrap up to what was going on in the plot and I really loved this one. Clary really grew as a character, and everything just came together really nicely.

    2. Twilight by Stephanie Meyer – This will probably forever be on my all time favorites lists because it revolutionized a lot of reader’s love for reading, and this really helped to bring me back to loving reading novels.

    3. Daughter of Smoke & Bone by Laini Taylor – I loved the writing in this book, the tales that were weaved, the characters, the story, everything about it was just beautiful to me.

    4. The Kiss of Deception by Mary E. Pearson – As this was my first ever audiobook, I really loved it! The story was enchanting, the characters were all wonderful, and I just love the lore and the mystery behind everything!

    5. Queen of Shadows by Sarah J. Maas – This series seriously gets better and better with each book, and since I haven’t finished Empire of Storms yet I can’t exactly put it on this list, but this one is for sure amazing. Love love love!

    6. The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson – This was my first adult epic high fantasy read and it was so good. There was so much action and so much put into this world, and it’s only the first book! I loved the characters, the plot was interesting, and the magic was unique.

    7. Fushigi Yuugi by Yuu Watase – This is my favorite manga series of all time, and it’s fantasy, so if I didn’t put this on this list then there’s something wrong with me. I love the story, the characters, the art, the plot, everything about it is amazing in my eyes. I highly recommend this series!

    8. The Raven King by Maggie Stiefvater – Excuse me while I go search for my heart because THIS BOOK DESTROYED ME. This finale was so epic and lovely and intense and WE ALL KNEW WHAT WAS COMING, BUT COULD WE HANDLE IT? NO! So good.

    9. A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas – FAVORITE. BOOK. OF. THE. YEAR. I loved this book SO much and it DEMOLISHED ME (since TRK destroyed me, you know). The characterization was awesome, the setting was beautiful, SQUAD GOALS, action, romance… it was everything I needed in my life and more.

    10. Dreams of Gods and Monsters by Laini Taylor – As the third and final book in this trilogy, my heart soared when I read it. It was so beautiful and huge (seriously, the book is massive in comparison to the other two) and I felt like it wrapped up everything wonderfully. Of course I want more, but you know, it’s fine the way it is.

  • Hobby Corner: September ANIME Edition

    hobbycornerbanner

Welcome to another edition of Hobby Corner, a monthly edition I introduced to talk about my hobbies and interests other than reading. It’s always important to not forget these things, so here I am to talk about some of mine.

    This month’s topic: anime!

I’m pretty sure most people are familiar with anime and have seen at least one episode in their lifetime of some form of it. Whether that be Pokemon, Sailor Moon, Dragonball Z, or something else entirely, you’ve probably seen an anime once in your life.

I find anime to be a really fun and fascinating thing because 1) it provides entertainment, and 2) I love most of the art styles.

Recently I got into anime again after a long stretch of not being into anime or manga (which will be another topic for another day), and I forgot just how entertaining it can be! So today I’m going to talk about my recent favorites and shows I’ve watched.

    Orange

If you’ve seen my review for the manga, then you know just how much I love this series. The anime follows the manga to a T and I just absolutely love it! It’s about a girl named Naho who receives a letter from herself in the future, telling her of events that involve the new transfer student, Kakeru, and how it asks Naho to save him. It’s a story about friendship, loss, suicide, depression, and love.

This anime is so amazing. Because I’ve already read the manga I know what will happen and stuff, but it follows the story line so perfectly and I find that I fell in love with the characters all over again watching this. As of right now it’s ongoing, to eleven episodes and you can watch them on Crunchyroll.

The characters are each amazing and have distinct personalities, the plot is easy to follow between past and future and what is going on with the letters involved, and the animation style is more realistic in a sense, but still has that fun touch to it that makes it unique. I highly recommend you check out this anime!

    Ore Monogatari!! (My Love Story!!)

    oremonogatari

WATCH THIS ANIME. STOP WHAT YOU’RE DOING AND WATCH IT NOW. This anime is soooo funny and soooo cute and oh my God, I can’t recommend it enough!

It’s about a high school freshman, Takedo, who isn’t your average high schooler because he’s huge, buff, and also the sweetest and purest guy you’ll ever meet. It follows him through his time meeting Rinko Yamato, a high school freshman who goes to an all girls’ school and who is also very pure and innocent. The two of them, along with Takedo’s best friend, Makato Sunakawa, develop a great friendship, and Rinko and Takedo form a beautiful relationship.

I laughed out loud SO MUCH when I watched this series! The entire series is up on Crunchyroll, so I highly suggest you check it out, for sure. 10/10 stars. Adorable story, awesome art, hilarious content, so many cliche things that are too funny, and just an overall good time.

    Haikyuu!!

    haikyuu

Never in a million years would I have thought I’d be into a sports anime. BUT OH MY WAS I WRONG. This anime is about volleyball and a boy’s determination to become the best ace (spiker) he can be. But because of his height, he’s often looked at as unfit to play the part, but he shows everyone up with his awesome skills!

This anime has a lot of friendship, teamwork, getting to know yourself, and hilarity. I’ve laughed a lot at the this anime just because so much of it is just sooo funny! But I also love how INTENSE some of these episodes are because OMG. I can’t. Some of the tournament episodes literally have me on the edge of my seat, staring at the screen, chanting, “Come on come on come on…”

I highly recommend this anime even if you’re not into sports because it’s sooooo good! The art style was different and it took me a few episodes to get used to, but the action scenes are flawless and intense, the dialogue is great, and the rivalries that spawn between teammates and opponents can be felt through the screen. Definitely check it out!

Okay, I think that’s good for now. I really suggest you guys check out these anime because they are all so amazing and so fun. Definitely worth checking out each one of them!

The next time I’ll do a throwback and talk about older anime that I was wicked into as a kid (and maybe even now as an adult).

    Let’s Chat! ≧◡≦

What are some recent anime shows you’ve watched and would recommend to me? What do you gravitate more towards? I love shoujo anime as it has a lot of tropes that revolve around romance, but I also like the funny ones, too. Share with me all the things!

  • My Currently Reading Shelf & Why It’s a Lie

If you use Goodreads then you know about the three “shelves” that they give you upon signing up: read, currently reading, and want to read. These three shelves really define a bookworm’s real shelves, but of course the option to add more shelves is always there and people come up with really creative names for what they want to shelve their books on.

Me? I’m lazy and just use the three.

BUT. If you take a look at my currently reading shelf…

    screen-shot-2016-09-09-at-9-45-39-pm

THIRTY. SIX. BOOKS. What the hell is that number about? I can barely focus on the one book I’m currently reading at the moment, let alone thirty-six!

See now, I have this bad habit. Do you want to know what it is? (of course you do, why else are you here?)

I start books and don’t finish them.

I KNOW. HEATHEN. But, let me explain.

It’s like I’ve talked about before a few times on my blog about how I want to read certain books during certain times of the year, or I’m just not in the mood to read, etc. These factors are huge in determining on whether or not I finish a book. If I’m super into it, don’t have a crap ton of stress in my life, or am just not super tired like I’ve been lately, then I can read a bunch of books in any given month. I find them enjoyable and I can fly through them sometimes.

But then there are times when I just… can’t.

I mean, don’t get me wrong, I generally DO enjoy the books I’m reading at that given moment they’re sitting in my currently reading shelf, but more often than not my mood changes and I just don’t want to read it anymore.

My earliest book on that shelf is A Game of Thrones. I started reading it back on December 23, 2013. Almost three YEARS ago, people. Three. Years.

    screen-shot-2016-09-09-at-9-54-16-pm

And then I have a few books I started two years ago or last year and I’m just sitting here like, “Why haven’t I finished reading them?”

I know a couple of them I’m probably definitely not going to read anytime soon, so I can remove those if I wanted, but the others? I actually AM interested in reading them, but I just haven’t because… why?

Laziness? Lack of interest? More interesting books on my shelf?

I think yes to all three.

I also enjoy using the currently reading shelf to constantly update my reading progress on the book I’m currently reading at that moment. I like seeing my progress and how close I am to finishing and seeing if I can finish it in a certain time frame and stuff like that. It’s like a competition with myself.

I find that the shelves on Goodreads are super useful and awesome, for sure, but I think it’s just my mind’s constant flow of wanting to read ALL THE THINGS that so many books get pushed aside for just one book I’m super interested in at the time.

    Let’s Chat! ≧◡≦

Do you abuse your currently reading shelf like I do? How many books are you actually currently reading? Are your shelves on Goodreads accurate representations of what you’ve actually read/are currently reading? Share your insights! I must know!
